Steel wheels for winter oem or aftermarket?

Featured Replies

Hi people.

I am looking for a little bit of advice.

I got caught out in the snow last night, summer tyres are definitely not for snow.

My dilemma is do I

1. Hold out for some oem steel wheels.

2. Get some brand new aftermarket steel wheels with winter tyres pre-fitted from tyreleader - https://www.tyreleader.co.uk/steel-wheels/skoda/octavia-ii-scout-rs/2-0tdi-19809

3. Get winter tyres fitted to my 18 inch alloys.

Any thoughts as always greatly appreciated. The specs of those steel wheels look like they will suit my car but would like reassurance.

Thanks.

It is all down to aesthetics.

If you can't be doing with black steel trolley wheels on your vRS then it'll be best to put winters on your 18" Neptunes.

Problem is they are more expensive and less resilient to potholes and damage from objects hidden under the snow.

I bought a set of scabby alloys from eBay and had them refurbished. I now have the same design of alloys for both summer and winter, just two different sets.

I don't mind black steel wheels as they will be off again when the weather gets better.

4 Avon ice touring xl are coming in at 450 fully fitted from national.

4 16 inch steels with Goodyear ultragrip 9 tyres 350 ish. So about 100 quid saved.

Plus no risk to my newly refurbished alloys.

Are those steel wheels in the link above definitely compatible with my vrs?

Thanks

Yes, they will be identical to the spare wheel in the boot.

Take it out and check the numbers stamped into the back of it. These should match those on the Tyreleader website...

What spare wheel? I have tyre gunk and a compressor.

Every spare wheel kit I look at says not for vrs.

I've run steel wheels and winter tyres on my Passat's for the last 6 years.

I got the package from www.mytyres.co.uk . The wheels have been great, just gave them a spray with Smoothrite Satin Black a couple of years back to keep the rust at bay.

The Fabia has it's tyres swapped on the original alloys but that adds £70 a year.

Think I might just get the tyre leader package.

Mytyres want 480 for the same package. Tyreleader only want 360.

Ah, the original owner missed off the important £75 spare wheel factory option.

This replaced the foam and compressor for a full sized 16" spare wheel, branded tyre, scissor jack and wrench as pictured on my car above.

The 16" steel will fit the vRS. It is close to the calipers but they fit.

Yip they sure did. So I am still hunting for a kit. Are all vag spare wheel kits the same? I might call my local vw dealer for a price if they are. I am not having a good experience with the skoda dealer I bought the car from.

I agree Mike. I will check my balance on the plastic and order the full set from tyreleader. As they look to be same spec as oem wheels and are coming in at a reasonable price with decent winter rubber. I don't have the time or patience to scour the salvage yards.

Seen a set on eBay with sailin winter tyres for 350 (read mixed reviews on sailin winters).

Tyreleader have 4 steel rims and will fit 4 Goodyear ultragrip 9 (I have used this tyre before and was very impressed) for 360. So a tenner more for a known brand tyre

Steel wheels have previously been silly money (not much cheaper than a good set of s/h alloys) but those do seem reasonably priced.

I personally couldn’t run steel wheels in the winter, but if the looks do not bother you they are certainly a cheaper option.

As for a spare wheel, just put one of the set you are not using in the boot and buy the jack etc needed.

I got a cracking deal on my old car. 15 quid for all 4 steel wheels that had no tyres. Then I just fitted new winter tyres. Sadly I had to fork out 80 quid for new wheel nuts as the alloy ones wouldn't hold the wheels properly.

Some great deals on alloys I'm the sales area I'd just wait till you see some on there for a good price personally.

And also I've not come across any insurers that have a problem with steel wheels but many have issues with aftermarket or non standard fit alloys.

I used to run steels but on the last few cars I've used genuine alloys off ebay as they are no more expensive and will have better resale value when I need to move them on.

The issue is I don't have the time to wait for a good deal on alloys if I wanted to go down that route.

If this weekends weather is an indication of what's to come, I kind of need to sort something sooner rather than later.

Be that winter tyres on my current 18 inch alloys and risk ruining the finish as they have just been refurbished. Or get steelies with winter tyres in 16 inch guise.

Thanks for the pointer to the sales section. I might have sourced some from there if postage will be fair.

If not back to plan A - tyreleader

I've got OEM steels with Nokian winters and run Dunlops on the alloys during the summer.

I'm also approx. 1 hours drive from you, and my advice would be...

Don't bother!

In our geographic location get yourself a set of All Season tyres, with snowflake/mountain and M+S rating, and pop 'em on your alloys for trouble free all year round motoring. Our summers are never hot enough to affect the performance of All Seasons to any great extent, and our winters never cold enough to make a huge difference between Winters with the M+S and Mtn/Snowflake ratings and the All Seasons with the same rating.

I've had Goodyear Vector 4 Seasons and Vredestein Quatrac and on my Fabia and the Polo that went before it and I would recommend either.

As soon as my Octy's winters and summers need replaced, I'll be selling my steels and sticking to All Seasons thereafter.

I appreciate your reply Rab.

However as I have just had the wheels refurbished I don't fancy them being ruined by the salt/grit from the roads.

There are pros and cons of all seasons tyres.

I contemplated them for my old car but opted for a set of steels for the sole purpose of protecting my alloy wheels.

If the weekend weather was an indication of what could come. I would rather buy winter tyres with steel wheels at half the cost of all season tyres for my 18 inch alloys.

The tyres on the car were just fitted a week or so ago (by the dealer) so it will be a while before they need replacing so I require something that will give me grip in the cold weather and occasional snow.
