help please on a few problems

Featured Replies

right so recently got mk1 oct vrs. I've got the central locking problem, prob need to change the module. But the fob would do the alarm still.

I've just put an after market head unit in the car. 2 more problems now, the radio is constantly on and I have to turn on/off manually on the head unit instead of ignition turning it on. How do I sort that?

and now the fob won't do the alarm, the red light doesn't flash inside anymore. Is this related to the radio?

another problem is the gear stick doesn't reset itself to neutral (middle of the gears) when you pull it out of gear if that makes any sense. Think I need a new spring that pushes it into neutral. Where can i get this spring and is it easy to replace.

fuse board has some fuses missing, but they either have no connectors (for things i don't have like interior phone etc) then some have just 1 connector.

any help on these would be really appreciated

Stereo problems:

With regard to the fob problems, it may still be related to the door module, or you may have disturbed some wiring somewhere. Either way I'm not sure on this one, someone else may come along soon with an answer. Oh, and are you sure that you have an alarm? These came with an immobiliser only, afaik an alarm was an option.

With regard to the radio being on all the time, that's a simple one - you've got the permanent and switched 'live' wires the wrong way round. Aftermarket stereos have both, so that there's a permanent feed for the memory and a switched feed from the ignition which wakes the stereo up and switches it on. If you have the car's permanent live connected to the stereo's switched live then it will be on all the time as yours is.

Gear selector spring: I would imagine that it can be bought from a main stealer or TPS - failing that, I've just had a look on ebay and there are loads of good used gear lever selector units for sale for around 20 quid. I've had mine apart before and it's not a hard job to strip and rebuild.

Something to try before renewing the selector spring (unless it's obviously weak of course) would be to lubricate the pivots on the gearbox end of the selector cables. Give them a good spray with some slippy stuff and work the gear lever.

As for the fuse box, this is how it should look.

Most VRs's don't have a factory fit alarm, just an immobiliser, are you referring to that led flashing on the drivers door or do you have one in a different location?. If it is the second option, could we have a picture of the location please to help you.

The module will operate the door led, so if water has filled the unit or corrupted the pins, or they have rotted away completely, then you will get the issue that you have. You will also get this if the loom between the module and the inside of the door pillar has any fractures or breaks in it.

Have you checked your gear linkage cable retainers at the gearbox end have not broken and slipping on the cable?. they are only a plastic tripod arrangement trapped by a spring and break with age really easily. It is a regular well known issue on here because of this.

swapped the red and yellow wires and radio now turns off when the key is pulled on. Also by doing this the alarm/led is working now. Weird. I do have an alarm, appears must have been added. Theres a manual in the glovebox, let you know the details of that tomorrow. But it works of the key/fob combo i got for the car. Theres a circular black plastic disc underneath the headlight selector switch, which has a LED and also a small button to tap in a code if you don't have to key to turn alarm off.

could you give more detail on gear linkage cable retainers and selectors. where to check? etc. gets frustrating when trying to go from 2nd to 3rd whilst driving because the spring doesn't push you towards the centre when coming out of second. With the gaiter removed and pushing the gear stick along the neutral range (far right/left) it seems as the spring in my picture isn't pushing the gear stick back to the middle? I've tried cleaning the areas and sprayed with white grease but no difference. The metal in the spring itself seems hard but maybe slightly unwound where it coils round.

have ordered a new window/door module from eBay so lets see if that fixes the central locking problem.

Really appreciate the help guys, keep it coming.

With credit to Yellowcar for this guide, should explain most of your issues - http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/336309-how-to-check-and-protect-your-door-multiplugs/

This guide should answer the gear lever setting issues - http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/186540-gear-linkage-adjustment-video-no-longer-available/
