Non starting issue

Featured Replies

Hey guys my 2004 Octavia VRS 1.8t has never let me down until the other day when I drove about 200 miles in it. It drove spot on but when I turned it off it wouldn't start again (seemed as if there was no fuel rather than no spark), it would try to and eventually would after a few farts. Also threw the engine management light on. Then when I drove home shortly after which was another 200 mile trip it drove spot on and would start first time every time after I got home. When I got home and knocked it off and started it again the engine management light went out but I still plugged it in to a Snap-On Solus diagnostics, the faults that came up were "16705 Engine RPM Sensor - G28 not a plausible signal P0321 - intermittent" and "Error in mapped cooling system (check temperature - sensor and thermostat) P1296". For the past few days it's been starting and running fine and the engine management light remains to stay out, but the faults won't erase..

I know that the RPM sensor is the crank sensor (£108 new for a genuine part!!), and the cooling system sensor is the green temp sensor by the thermostat (more realistic price for a genuine part)..

Just wondering if there's anything else that would cause these faults rather than spending an arm and a leg on sensors and that not fixing it as I've read so much on people changing the crank sensor and having no joy..

Also why would it only do it after a long drive, and be fine otherwise?

The fault codes are telling you what's wrong & it's not uncommon for either the crank or cam position sensors to become intermittent with temp changes when failing.

Coolant sensor failure is extremely common on many VAG cars.
