Bought a really nice Octavia vrs 1.8t yesterday. I bought the car knowing its only done 3k miles in the last 15 months so I expected to ve doing some minor work to it. I noticed the car judders a bit when accelerating especially between 2500 and 3500rpm. I threw in a ltr of diptane and put some throttle body cleaner in and no change. Last night an engine management light came on and an error showed up on the hand held as :error-system running too lean in bank 1. Since then the revs are going up and down slightly when idling and it is starting to stink of petrol. Im hoping this is only a small problem as i am skint at the moment. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

ps. I had a quick look at all the hoses and pipes and I cant see any splits in any. I know skoda in Cork will rob you just to tell you the fault too so if anyone has come across this can you please offer some advice, cheers

Split pipes can be difficult to pinpoint. Listen for hissing around the inlet manifold when at idle. S pipe under the inlet manifold is notorious for splitting.

To clean the Throttle Body properly it needs to be removed.

I will have 2 have a proppre look into it. do you think the throttle body could be the cause of the juddering? Its really annoying me and I definitely dont want to make the issue any worse by driving her harder. bare in mind Im a complete nubie to turbo cars.Unfortunately I was a vtec man up to now

Poor idle would usually be split Vacuum/boost pipe or Coolant temp sensor fault.

The jerkiness under acceleration I would clean the TB properly & go from there.

I had similar symptoms and the fault code bank 1 running too lean, I found a big split in the pipe comming from the inlet manifold, think it was the crank case ventilation pipe? Replaced it, the light has stayed out and it drives smother now. mine was making a constant hissing noise when boosting so prehaps listen out for that.

The usual suspects are the ones under the inlet manifold on the pcv system. Right pain in the arse to get to and change. Theres two on either side of the dipstick tube. The one on the right is the pcv one, that split on mine and caused the same codes your getting. Sometimes the split is difficult to see. Probably best of listening for a 'hissing' noise or you can remove the black tray infront of the inlet manifold, which is only held in place by four screws. That will give u a better view on the pipes. Give them a good look over. If it is one of those pipes your best off replacing the lot as when one goes the rest will be in similar condition.

UPDATE- ok lads Ive done loads since i first posted but still no fix. Ive tried clean out the throttlebody, checked the coils, replaced the air filter, changed the dumpvalve( a friend had a forge out of his audi tt) I cant hear any hissing at all from any part of the engine. The problem seems to be getting worse now which is leading me to think It could be an injector giving trouble. the MAF was also replaced only 10k miles ago...Im lost :'(

Judsering when cold only or when hot?

both. when im accelerating. it was just between 2500 and 3500 rpm in all gears now its starting in 5000rpm range. turbo is boosting perfect and car is reving fine too. its only when car is driving... now some times if i go from 1st to 4th hard It wont judder but thats only like maybe 1 in 10 times. I cannot figure it out at all

Ive admitted defeat and gave it to a mechanic this morning. I would of loved to gind the issue myself but I think its in more capable hands now

I've re read your initial post. Sounds like pre cat lambda to me. If it's bank 1 too lean and you can smell petrol as it's over fuelling

UPDATE AND FINALLY FIXED!!!!!! I was sitting at home going through every possibility in my head and I just thought to myself why not check the plugs.... sure enough it had a set of 2 euro halfords spark plugs in her. Replaced them with the new platinum coated iridium plugs and started her up. She is perfect. No juddering not too smokey and is pulling like a train. Cheap fix to a problem that had me driven up the walls
