Rear drum brake adjustment

Featured Replies

Hi,

I changed the read brakes on the Mrs' car a few months ago (drums, shoes, cylinders and fitting kit), but since then it's been hard to get the handbrake adjusted correctly (it's tightened as far as it will go at the handbrake end). I fitted everything as it came off the car, but I suspect the little automatic adjuster wedges aren't doing their jobs properly.

I'll take a look at them tomorrow night (MOT friday), but is there anything common that it could be...or a fitting diagram?

Thanks,

Iain

Sometimes the adjusting arm that swings on the shoe gets rusted up at the pivot point and fails to allow the auto adjuster to operate.

Self adjusters don't work very well anyhow. You still have to adjust the shoes when servicing.

See the how to on rear brake adjustment.

Where are the how to's?

Just search and it will pop up.....

Great, thanks for the info. Kind of what I was expecting I'd need to do, and will hopefully be a quick job. I was expecting the adjuster would drop by initial application of the brake pedal, but I guess it needs a little encouragement!

Got them sorted last night, thanks. Re-test today, so here's hoping :)

Found the how to's and bookmarked.

Thanks!
