Have I Had A Claim?

Featured Replies

Hi All,

After a little advice, to cut a long story short....

My car was parked round the corner from my house in the road, someone backed off there driveway and reversed straight into my car which was parked on the opposite carriageway to there driveway. He accepted full liability at the time and all was well.

I reported it to my insurance company who said to speed things along I could either claim on my insurance and they would chase the money back, or alternatively go through a company called Albany Assistance who would pay for the repairs and claim the money back themselves. This option meaning that there is no change to my premium / loss of NCB.

Is this a claim? When shopping around for new quotes this year, do I need to be telling them about this?

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Yes, you need to tell them. Because the question they ask is "Have you had any accidents or claims in the past X years?" and then they quantify this with "Your insurance may be void if you fail to inform us of anything which may affect etc."

It's not relevant to ask if you've had a claim, it's more relevant to ask "Do I need to inform them of this?" and the answer would certainly be yes.

Edit: Add to this that they already know you've had an accident and a claim because you told them, now you need to make sure you don't mislead them by telling them you haven't.

Yes, you must tell them.

Insurance companies usually ask you if there have been any "incidents" (not necessarily claims) during the last X years.

Thanks chaps, you are thinking on the same lines as me there.

Its not really worth not telling them is it, I am however going to make sure to get quotes with and without the "claim" to see how much difference it makes... In my eyes it should make no difference but insurance company's aren't going to see it that way im sure!

"Have you had any claims, regardless of fault, in the last 5 years?" is the question we ask, so you'd need to answer "Yes". Hope that helps.

With claims make sure you're very specific when you answer the date etc... they will likely carry out what's called a CUE check - some companies can be real pains and charge you fee's/ additional premiums just for amending the date, cost of claim etc..

I assume the claim has been settled? If you're not sure - do check this with your insurer of the time, you will have to state it's pending/ outstanding if it is - and this will more than likely lead to an increase in premium - you are able to claim back the difference in premium once the claim is settled - if this is the case of course!

I used a 3rd party claims company a couple of years back when someone smashed into the back of my parked car. They were very good & made sure all genuine parts were used, a great S5 convertible was given as a loan car & best of all they guaranteed the claim regardless of the claim been settled by the other party. Would definitely recommend using one if your the innocent party involved in an accident :)

Moreover to your original question. Even though I never used my own insurance company, in fact I told them to take no further part other than record the incident, I still inform my new insurers of the incident, it's a requirement you must adhere to :)
