Quick query - what's the correct oil for 1.8 tsi?

Featured Replies

My recently purchased 2010 1.8 tsi Octy needs some oil (no surprise there!) and from what I can see it should be 5W30 with VW 502.00 compatibility. However, I also see reference to VW 504.00. Will either type be ok and is the VW compatability obvious when purchasing the oil? In 25 years of car ownership I don't think I've ever had to buy oil!

Thanks in advance.

VW 504/507 is the longlife oil for extended services. If you are planning to change the oil every year then 502/505 should be fine.

I'd double check. Cars with mechanical high pressure fuel pumps normally require 506.01 as a minimum I think.

Grade and spec spot on but dealers don't always use Quantum. That said for the money you can't go far wrong.

Sorry, should of said 'Some'  :D

I think for the price of that oil its a no-brainer not to use the highest spec.

Couldn't agree more, I've stocked up.

Thanks all. I've ordered some too.

Nope.  That's incorrect for the tsi / tfsi engines.

1.8tsi is 502.00 on fixed service and 504.00 on variable.

It's just as easy (and cheap) to run 504.00 all the time.

I run a lot of Castrol 5w-30 502.00 in mine as I change the oil at 7500km intervals and it comes on special for AUD30 (GBP15) at the local parts place every 6 months.

The good thing about running 502.00 is that there is some flexibility in the viscosity so you can run (for instance) mobil1  0w-40 during winter for cold starts and the 40w is good if your engine likes a drink or you do a few track days or it's a ridiculously hot summer
