Help - Twisting/Groaning noises before starting engine

Featured Replies

Hi,

I hope you can help as you guys hav in the past!

Scout CR 2.0 2011

Recently when I go I put my key in and turn the dash on (not the engine), i get a loud twisting/creaking/groaning noise from what sounds like in underneath+infront of the gear stick, the audio unit (columbus) and the far right of the passenger glovebox/right hand side of the front passinger air bag. As far as I can tell the sound is inside and cannot be heard outside. I have no idea what is casuing the sound. It goes on for about 5-10 seconds but vaires each time.

It happens mostly the first couple of times I use it (whatever time of day or location, but doesn't happen if say I start the engine after stopping for 5-10 mins at the shops).

Car drives fine and haven't noticed any noises while driving.

I have a skoda used warranty still but don't want to take it to the dealer without having some idea of the problem first. They will otherwise just do the usual of charge me £102 diagnostic fee, say computer says its fine or may try and bamboosal me from past experience with trying to get the dealer to fix issues. Catch 22 is if I drive there and try and so them the problem it probably won't make a sound.

I will try and catch it on video if I can figure out how to upload it to the web if people are struggling to identify the probable issue.

Cheers in advance guys!

If its inside and behind the dash I would suspect its one of the climate control flap motors.

With the ignition on I would try and go through the different settings to try and replicate the fault. By settings I mean try pressing the recirc., moving the temperature knobs, and the air direction buttons etc.

If he columbus is working ok I doubt its that making a noise unless its the fan in the back of it

Just went outside to try the suggested - None of the settings I pressed (all the climate ones, air con/air directions, dual climate function etc) recreated the sound.

I got the noise again when I got in the car and turned the dash on. :(

My climate makes a groaning noise if I drive somewhere and stop, sitting with the keys in the ignition. I can only assume it always makes noises but the engine makes such a racket on a diesel I never hear it when the car is running.

Been looking into the threads on the climate flap issue. But they tend to mention a clicking noise (no clicking noise and the noise appears to come from a few places as mentioned above) but this is more of a tightening/twisting/groaning/creaking noise.

Hmmm any further thoughts?

Turn the CC off by turning the fan all the way down. Then restart the car and see if the noise happens.
