NEED HELP! Tdi Elegance!

Featured Replies

Really needing help as I'm not far from giving up and breaking it for parts! I have a 2002 elegance estate, 1.9tdi, quick run up - she's had 2 new back shockies, one rear spring, one rear strut mount, new rear disks and pads, 2 rear wheel bearings, osf shock, new front pads, wheel bearing and lower arm. And within the past 6 months 2 front ball joints, new front disks, 2 track rod ends and a n/s/f wheel bearing.

Issues that are making me give up is, the osr wheel bearing won't bolt up onto the shaft true, when spun its hitting either side of the caliper carrier? The wheel bearing that came off that same shaft spun true but WAS noisy! A local garage is telling me he thinks its a bent shaft on the axle, when driven you can visibly watch the wheel/tire move in and out slightly and it creates a lot of heat! And when the brakes applied you can feel it pulsing as the pad will be pushing the piston in and out constant! what are all your thoughts?? Garage tells me best thing is scrapping her but she's far too good a car for that!!!

Also, the front is lethal when I lay off the throttle! You have no confidence at all in the steering, it feels horrible! I thought it was the o/s/f bearing as it feels like that wheel is doing whatever it wants, but this has been replaced! could it be subframe bushes? steering rack? My dad reckons the cv joint could be causing this but I'm not too sure, the front end is all over the place! I know the rear bearing wont be helping this but before the work was done the front still had this "untrusty steering" feel. Your constantly having to fight with it off the throttle!

Any help would be greatly appreciated guys! The starter motor has started coming on with the key OUT the ignition, so she also needs a new starter, and one of my collegues managed to shut my boot on an oven, which resulted in the back window getting smashed...which I will fix, but I need to get these more..lets say more important issues solved first lol..

Please help guys!!!

Assuming it's not four wheel drive, and the rear beam is straight, then the back might just need a stub axle, which isn't an expensive part at all.

The front end could be a lot of things, and CV joint is one of them, though I'd expect some noise at the same time. I'd suggest finding a decent, patient garage and paying them to get it up in the air and do a proper diagnosis, sadly, these garages are rather hard to come by.

The starter is an odd one, does it actually start or just crank over? I'm thinking the contact unit on the back of the ignition barrel.

To be fair though, all of what I've put is guesswork without seeing the car.

Shame you're not a bit nearer - my mate needs a new engine for his car, sounds like you need a new car for your engine ;)

I would say that the new bearing is at fault (was it a genuine one)? You need to sort out the rear before looking at the front, as that will be causing lots of issues. Personally I wouldn't drive it until the rear bearing is sorted. You could always try and find a complete rear axle second hand, there are plenty out there. The front could be any number of things, but you won't know what for sure until fixing the rear first.

thanks for the replies! yeah its 2 wheel drive! It just puzzles me that the old noisy bearing turned true on the same shaft! Unfortunately a garage isn't an option due to where I live! ..well it will be but not until the back bearing is done! The cv joint is not noisy but as I have a half a spare driveshaft with a new cv joint fitted, I'm going to swap that in the next few days to rule it out! The starting issue must be the starter, the live comes off the battery straight to the starter then upto the car so i reckon that's just dampness, after a whack it behaves lol I just don't wanna go to the hassle of changing it until i sort the other issues! The new wheel bearing wasn't genuine! Think I'l order a genuine one tomorrow morning before I go about changing axle bits! Has it been known before for new faulty bearings? I'm hoping that's all it is!! Then as you say i can concentrate on the front after that! Many thanks! Scott

When the wheel bearings were done was the proper vag tool used to fit the new bearing? If not the bearing is probably toast. Also is the rear disc sitting true on the hub? If not that could be the source of the problem.

proper vag tool? this might be an issue lol, I just slid it on, slowly tightened the nut by hand while spinning it slowly, slowly progressing tighter, I done the nearside rear the same way and that turned out braw! Any more assistance would be appreciated, cheers

the disk is 100% true to the hub though! you can see the bearing being off true even by watching the abs ring!

The bearing is knackered.

Actually I take it all back. On the back the bearing is built into the hub and you replace the whole thing, rather than just the bearing.

Sorry what do you mean? The bearing came fitted inside a new hub assembly, then it just slides onto the shaft on the axle hub, unless its a dodgy new bearing, do you think its worth trying getting another new one?

Update** got another new bearing and it went on lovely! So dingbro refunded me for the dodgy one, the front ended up being the the n/s front lower arm bushes! Thanks for all your replies! As one thing is fixed tho, the water pump has now decided to start making a racket! Cars eh!!
