Worrying engine sound - advice please

I don't accelerate past 3,000rpm often, but recently when I have and got to about 3,400rpm the engine noise changes drastically. It's smooth and quite muffled up to that point and then it gets really harsh/coarse sounding from there on. it still pulls at the same rate up to the red line. Is there anything that kicks in/ out about that point in the rev range?

 

My car is a 2010 1.6CRTDI now with about 43k miles.
