Number plate lights whilst on sidelights.

Featured Replies

Hi guys.

Just a quick one, again :D

I've just been out in the Yeti (its a 2015 S), parked it at the side of the road and left the sidelights on.

I was walking back to the car and realised the numberplate lights arent on.

Dont they usually come on with the sidelights? They do on my 2013 MK2 Fab and most other cars ive driven.

Any ideas?

Cheers :)

Perhaps not when you've turned the ignition off?

And did you have the side lights all on or just the relevant parking lights on one side?

(You do know about those?)

If they had failed completely you would have had the "bulb failure warning" showing on the dash.

Graham, do the parking lights work off the indicator selection with the ignition off?

My dealer set four channels on the radio and that was that, same for the previous car.

Yes, you put the indicator stalk in the direction you want the lights on then turn off the ignition.

Can't check on mine as SWMBO has taken it away for the weekend.

Maybe some might check their cars

When you use the 'parking Light's. Ignition off, indicator stalk down or up. Is there a front and rear sidelight on, but also a single rear number plate bulb on at the rear side that the sidelight bulb is illuminated?

On the three TIBETs (two Elegances, one L&K - all Xenon/rain & light sensor set up) that I have owned, the number plate lights extinguish when the car is locked with the light switch left in an 'on' position - be it side lights or in 'auto' mode for the 'coming home/leaving home' function to operate (edit - just looked - when in auto for the lights 'leaving home' the number plate lights do come on with the other lights when unlocking).

I seem to recall that these days parking with only one side's parking lights illuminated (activated by the indicator stalk) is not allowed and I can't say I've ever looked to see what the number plates do when this is done as I don't leave the one side parking lights on.

Parking Light's are not only allowed in the UK, but are in the Highway Code as being required when parked on unlit streets. Things go out of fashion and technology changes but the Highway Code is slow in changing

Okay, what I meant by 'parking lights' on one side was that I do not park on the road side at night with only the off-side* rear and front side lights illuminated by the use of the indicator stalk being left in the off side indicator 'on' position.

If I park on the road side at night I leave what is effectively the side lights illuminated - ie two at the front (white) and two at the back (red).

[*One must not park against the flow of traffic unless in a designated parking place - this is to do with reflectors only being at the rear - and this has caused issue for smart (car) drivers who park nose into the kerb, ie side onto the traffic flow]

Please link the Parking Light part from the HighwayCode. As it is on mk2 Fabia the battery will sometimes not start the car in the morning if you leave it parked overnight with one front and one rear side light on, let alone parked with 4 sidelights illuminated.

I did an advanced driving course a couple of years ago. I was a bit surprised to hear the Highway Code had received only one major re-write since its introduction.

Remember the two stage on/off knob......what more complexity could we invent.
