Wobbly gear stick

Featured Replies

Afternoon all :)

I've had an on going issue with my wobbly/slack gear stick since I bought the car new back in 2011, its a diesel CR Octy RS. The main issue has been that when the gear stick is moved into gear there is a loud clunking sound from under the gaiter at the white plastic ball joint. Every time I had it in the garage they just caked the ball joint in white grease and said all was good!!! Eventually I just gave up  and just continued to drive it, its still only covered 25k miles. The other issue has been that when in most gears the gearstick has a good bit of side to side play.

What are others cars like? Does you have a lot of play when in gear? or loud sounds when going into gear? I have watched a good few of diesel geeks vids regarding the gear linkage and much of it looks straight forward to adjust but some looks like a garage job. Thoughts, pics, vids welcome.

Cheers

There is a video on youtube about putting a shim in somewhere to tighten up the play in older worn gear sticks not sure if that would help you any or not.

I did this on an old Ford Focus

Dead simple and cured the wobble instantly

If you pull up the gaiter you'll probably spot where you'd need to add a shim if necessary... :)
