Cost price plus a £1

Featured Replies

Just had text from my local Skoda offering any new car if registered before 31st March 2016 at cost plus £1.

Anyone know any true "cost" prices of new cars to see how genuine these deals are?

Unless the discount is about  10-12% I suspect a marketing gimmick.

They get around 10% to play with plus a small bonus if they meet a sales target.

This is why you can normally haggle about 8% off.

But bare in mind that part of that is taken back by Skoda if you choose the 0% finance.

Cars are not expensive from the factory, unregistered, but it is not that 'Cost Price',

It is in the UK and going on the Road First Registered.

It is the full Invoiced 'Cost Price'  OTR, at their premises, so the Delivery etc etc.

So ask them to set it all out as they would need to anyway.

If not genuine then Trading Standards will be asking questions surely, Advertising Standards etc etc

Also remember the "cost price" is the price they buy from Skoda UK at, as all dealers are franchises.

So not going to be THAT cheap, as Skoda UK has to buy the cars from the factory, add it's profit margin, then sell on to the dealers.

And Skoda UK needs all the money in it can get from VW and elsewhere, all the thousands of UK Euro 5 TDI's they sold

and now need to be in for 'The Fix',  Courtesy cars provided, trained technicians time etc etc.

If they got on with getting the Appointments made and some nice Gestures of Tea & Biscuits and a Real Discount on new vehicles they might get some sold as Current Owners waited in the Showrooms if 'The Fix' only takes 1 hour.

'Simply Clever' but not Skoda UK.

To be fair George, it's more a question about profit margin and cost price than venting about Skoda UK. :)

True,.

New Skoda UK Brand Director, new regime, still same old sales techniques, same old at the showrooms.

Next they will be calling owners to say, 'We have a buyer interested in your car, why not come in and see us.'

As a lifelong VW fan, may I say that I now consider them to be "pants". (Ahh! That feels better).

And replace Skoda with any other brand and the sentence is still true.

Having said that BossFox, perhaps it could still be argued that the advertising is disingenuous as the majority of people might reasonably assume that "cost price" means before anyone has added a profit margin.

Maybe, but they are separate businesses.  The cost price is just with the business you buy from.

After Skoda and Skoda UK have made it worth building it and sending it to the UK.

I guess people could think that, if they think they buy from Skoda Auto as that's the sign over the door.

And how are Skoda going to get you a new car registered before 31th of March?

I too received that advert. Their 'cost price' will probably be the list price of the car minus a discount which matches the percentage of profit the dealership makes on its revenue. As an example, Lookers Plc made 72.1 million profit on 3649.1 million revenue last year, which is a percentage profit of 1.9% of revenue.

A discount of 1.9% wouldn't be worth getting out of bed for! The problem is that main dealers are a very inefficient way of selling cars, the flash showroom, staff wages and demonstrators are all something you have to pay for and probably account for a few thousand pounds in the price of every car.

The true cost price of a car, on the road in the UK will be around what car supermarkets sell "nearly new" ex hire cars with 12000 miles on them for. In that case the manufacturer, hire company and car supermarket have all still made a profit, and very little of that will have come from people paying £20 to rent a car for a day.

Outofthi5world,

What do you mean?

They have New Unregistered Skoda all around the UK which can be registered before the 1st April do they not? (a Friday.)

Stock vehicles at Skoda UK, not new orders that won't arrive in time.

At any one time Skoda dealers can go online and see what stock cars (but unreserved) are available and also see what Skoda UK have ordered with how long it will take to arrive in the UK.

That's not including cars people have specifically ordered.

These can be reserved by the dealer and usually arrive on a transporter within a week.
