Car Insurance

Featured Replies

hey

Im a little confused and dont know the answer.

In a few weeks time, im having an operation on my Knee, and will not be able to drive much, so ive decided to SORN the car for a few months, however my MOT runs out soon. So car will be off the road, locked away.

Now i know that if i do this, i dont need insurance if its on provate land, no public access etc.

The issue i have got, is that if i need to get to the Hospital at any point, my Neighbour has kindly said i can borrow his car to get there, as its a 30 min drive.

I issue i have is i will have no insurance.

My question is, if i continue to pay my car insurance, on a SORN car, that has no MOT, is it still valid?? and can i still drive others on my policy

Im a little confused to the laws around this.

Somebody told me that you must have MOT to obtain insurance, but i dont think this is correct. You have to have insurance to drive an untaxed, and not MOT car to a test station??

Can someone clarify this

may seem stupid question, sorry haha

Might it be easier(cheaper/free) get your name added to neigbours insurance?

Yeah i will look into this, but still like to know where i would stand legaly on my own insurance.

I suggest you ask your insurer, as then you will get the CORRECT answer.

Does your current valid insurance policy cover you with 3rd party cover when driving other vehicles which you do not own or are the registered keeper of?

(not all do.)

As to your present Insurance, best have it running while the car is on a SORN and waiting its next MOT as it can still be stolen or damaged (fire /Vandalism) while locked away.

Best speak with your Broker or insurance company.

Yes im covered 3rd party on other vehicles,

No MOT won't invalidate your insurance. Even if they tell you it will.

Spoke to my provider, and they have stated that even if i SORN my car and MOT runs out, it does not change the policy, and im free to drive other cars, although they do advise that the 'drive any car' policy should not be used as a tempory or emergancy measure, not as a full time thing.
