POLL - Leasing Company Private Plate Transfer Charges

Featured Replies

I'm not going to write the background to this for fear of spoiling the Poll result!

I'd be interested in finding out what amount people think is a reasonable administration fee to pay to a leasing company to put a private plate on, or take it off, each charged as a separate transaction.

Please don't quote who charges what, I just want to know how much you think is reasonable?

Thanks

I've just inquired about this with VWFS yesterday for our new Octavia PCH.

The price quoted seemed reasonable to me, £0 to add it, the fee is to remove it.

Unfortunately it is the £80 fee from the DVLA at either end of the lease that spoilt it for me.

Ours is therefore staying on retention.

£0 is reasonable (that's what I paid to put on and take off)

There's no paperwork from their point of view (just typing the details into the computer to amend records) so the cost of your phone call is more than enough!

My take is you are paying them enough every month for the car itself so it's a bit of a cheek to ask for an 'admin' fee when it doesn't even generate any paperwork (generally speaking) these days.

It might not generate any paperwork but there's still some administrative work in adding and removing it.

True enough but if your paying out a few hundred quid a month to hire/buy the car I still think it's taking liberties to charge a fee for what is essentially taking a phone call and tapping a few keys on a computer.

Perhaps I've been fortunate but I put on/take off a private plate every 2-2 1/2 years with my cars and I've not paid a fee yet either with insurance of finance company. They have all been very reasonable when I have explained why I feel I shouldn't be paying the 'admin' fee and have done so at no cost.

I'm sure I will curse myself now and get stung next time!

It is only more recently that you can transfer a reg number all online.

It wasn't that long ago that hard copy forms had to be manually filled-in, posted and then you'd need to sort replacement MOT certificates and a tax disc.

In addition to that two new number plates needed to be made and paid for which now requires the V5C and proof of identity etc.

It is much simpler now being online and with the killing of the tax disc.
