Sudden whirring noise in dashboard, with road speed

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I have a 2003 reg Fabia Mk I, just experienced a sudden and dramatic whirring noise coming (apparently) from under the dashboard.  It kicks in at about 20mph and gets louder (not higher) as I speed up.  It's not caused by engine speed, but road speed from the wheels.

I do have a worn inner joint on one driveshaft that I know needs repair, but this was a sudden change and sounds similar to something like a slipping speedo cable, though the speedo and rev counter are both working fine.

Any suggestions very welcome!

So, was going mental trying to work this out and thinking "what have I done with the car recently, what have I changed?"  Couldn't figure it out at all and I thought "there's literally nothing changed... I mean, except for the wheelbarrow strapped to the luggage rack... with those tension strap thingies... sort of vibrating slightly against the roof..."

So it turns out the unexplained noise was an easier fix than I thought.

Never mind.

Had a similar experience today. Noticed a tappy vibration type noise on light throttle, pulling away, parking etc. Was starting to get worried about what it could be, injectors etc. Under bonnet today looking for clues and checking oil, put my hand on airbox and realised how loose it was. When replacing the filter the other day it looks as though I'd dislodged a rubber horseshoe type thing at the rear that grips on to a mounting point, and at some point during the day it lifted off completely, refitted properly. Problem seems to be solved. Looks as though the MAF got away with suffering extra vibration too, fingers xd!
