Mk1 fabia vrs se conked out now won't start

Featured Replies

Hi all. New here today. I've done some research and found similar faults but not quite the same.. On the way to work this morning the car cut out and wouldn't start. I've recently had the cam belt and water pump done so feared a faulty belt or tensioner but all seems ok there. Now I've noticed grey/white smoke coming from around the engine when you turn the engine over?? ... Also if you take the top intercooler pipe off it runs. Like a loud tractor but it runs. As soon as you put the intercooler pipe back in it kills the engine. I've had it plugged in by a local mechanic and isn't showing any fault codes. If any of you guys have any ideas I would be extremely grateful. Thanks in advance, James

Blocked intercooler? Eaten it's air filter? Or it may be wet? If it runs without the top intercooler pipe on that's where I would start as somewhere before that pipe sounds like it's blocked

Hope it helps

Have you checked your oil level since it conked out?

My turbo went, filled my intercooler with oil and then suffocated the engine so it wouldn't start until i took the top boost hose off

How many miles has it done?

Ever had a turbo?

As above, sounds like the turbo has gone, this can then stop any air getting into the inlet tract so the engine won't run.

Thanks guys! it's been towed to a mates garage tonight. He's going to look at the intercooler and turbo tomorrow so I'll update then. It's just done 105000 and had a turbo under warranty at around 45000. Sounds like it's going to be expensive. Best get some overtime in at work...

Sorry but reads like major obstruction in the inlet... Usually = dead turbo.

If/when you get a new one, new oil feed and return lines too.

Yep it's the turbo. Took the pipe off the centre of the turbo and could feel loose broken bits inside. Got it off today using a guide on here and looks like the impeller has broken into three bits.

Thanks guys, this forum is brill!!
