changing front right cv joint

Featured Replies

How easy is it to change the front right CV joint?

is it better/cheaper/easier just to change the whole drive shaft as a one-er?

thanks.

Price the parts up.

If you buy the whole shooting match, it is much better/quicker, I would have thought, than splitting the CV joint after drive-shaft is off the car.

You didn't say whether the inner or outer CV you wish to change.

If changing the outer joint here is a top tip. You must replace the original driveshaft bolt, it should be a six sided bolt with a blooming great washer on it. When the shaft is removed from the hub cut the washer off the bolt and wind it back into the shaft. Do it up all the way and it will pop the joint off.

The retaining clip is really tight and you will be there all day trying to knock it off.

That's a great tip. Do you know if it works for many other cars?

I had the whole shaft replaced recently. The garage said it was cheaper to change the whole thing. I didn't have the time to do it myself.

It was the front left one I had replaced.

I replaced the whole shaft too. Didn't cost a great deal from ECP and no need to worry about the inner CV having wear and tear too.

CWARD what symptoms did your car show?

mine has a very disturbing buzzing noise when turning left, have already changed the right front bearing twice and pads and disks all round.

not had a hunter alignment done yet but that's the next step, no sawtoothing evident of the tyres at all but its worth doing i think.

In my experience if you want to knock the joint off with a hammer it needs to be off the car and in a vice and that's half the battle so unless a whole driveshaft is a lot more expensive than just the joint I would be tempted to replace the whole thing

Mine was a clunking on setting off and once under way like a wheel was out of balance being able to feel it through the steering.
