High pitch whine at startup from cold

Featured Replies

Hi all,

my 1.8t Superb has developed a problem whereby when its started from cold a high pitch whine can be heard for approx 1-> 2 minutes and then goes away as the engine heats up.

I have tracked the noise to the front passenger side of the car ( low down) . As far as I can see there is only the intercooler there and that shouldn't whine, (should it ?).

anyone got any idea's on what could/is causing the problem ?.

thanks in advance

brendan

Are you sure that this isn't the Air Conditioning Compressor?

How many miles has your Superb done?

Have you started your car with the Air Con on or off? Try that and see what happens?

If it makes the noise with the Air Con on then I would guess that your Compressor Clutch is on the way out.

If it isn't this then I am afraid I don't have any other suggestion.

Could it be this sound?

A turbine-like sound after startup which disappears when the engine is warm

The turbine-like noise is the Secondary air pump operating. It pumps fresh air into the engine on a cold start to keep emmisions down and once the engine is at normal temp it will stop. The pump is mounted in front of the engine just slightly right of centre and looks a little like a siren.

Maybe the pump makes more noise when it is on its way out, in a manner of speaking.

Just found the thread below which might be relevant:

hi,

thanks baker21 and denis for your idea's. the car has 58,000 miles and the sound is present weither the aircon is off or on so it looks like the secondary pump denis spoke about. I'll book it in for repairs.

thanks again .brendan
