12V Power Socket

Featured Replies

Hi all, I'v got a single 12v socket with 1.5m lead, spades on the end. Can anyone help with where I could tap it into ? My plan is to have it either in the back seat area or the boot to connect a cooler/charge led's on the go. Thanks.

( sorry should have said I have a 56 Octavia hatch. )

Personally I'd run a cable from the fuse box to the back. You can get the correct terminal for the fuse box and populate it as per factory. A cable run from the fuse box to the centre console or even the boot realistically isn't very long and shouldn't take a great deal of time. At least this way you know you aren't overloading any single circuit or going to cause any issues.

Thanks for getting back, I'm not clued up on these things. I got some add a fuse, could I put a 5v fuse in one, take the spade off the positive of the lead, join it, and plug it into an empty fuse slot then connect the ground to the body ?

You mean a 5amp fuse?

What does the cool box draw current wise? It won't be more that 5 amps I wouldn't have thought.

It will tell you on the cool box what its current draw is.

Yes it does, thanks for your help.

Bit more awake now...  :nerd:

I have a Volton ZR1220 split charge relay in a side pocket of my Superb II boot. It's wired with a plug on the inlet and a socket on the outlet. When carrying cold food going on holiday I keep an electric coolbox plugged in (similar to yours) and it turns on a few seconds after starting the engine and turns off a few seconds after turning off

Photos attached - I think?

Thanks, it looks like you already have a power socket in the boot... The 12v power socket you have connected to it is the same as the one I purchased. I'm going to use add a fuse from the fuse box and run the cable to the back. I don't understand the split charge you are using, though some time ago before I got this car,  I looked into adding a split relay to the battery, running a lead to the back and connected to a deep cycle battery. I still might go down that route.

Only had the car for a couple weeks and am very pleased. I have already slept in it.. Plan is to just keep taking off in it and have all the connections and power I need on the go. I don't see why all that energy should not be used as much as I can. I'm looking into the split relay you posted, good stuff, thanks.  :notme:

Yes using a split charge relay and an additional leisure battery a good idea. Infact the Volton ZR1220 is usually used for the wiring up of towbar electrics to charge a caravan battery and run fridge whilst on the move. I myself have just used it on an existing permanently live socket to automatically turn on/off an electric cool box without doing any mods on the car as I'm still under the manufacturers warranty.

The ZR1220 detects the input voltage and energises when above a pre-set level (usually when engine started) and disconnects  when it drops (usually when engine stopped) - there is an adjustable pot on it but mine worked perfectly as default

Thanks for the info, I have just seen one - Volton ZR1220 - on ebay, only £17.50. Have you run it straight from the main battery ? And is there a fuse between the the battery and the Volton ?  As if so that could be the answer to what I want to do.

As you have seen in my simple "plug in" installation this is both covered by the fuse on the car's 12v boot socket (and possibly by another if you use a fused 12v plug)

If you hard wire straight back to the battery I would recommend a fuse somewhere

I've added some PDF installation instructions to my previous post

It is pretty simple though - chickens in, pies out  :D

Great, thanks I missed the PDF first time. The way you have set it up would be far better then my fumbling.  It's the way I'll go with it.

I'm only cluing up through YouTube and thanks for your help.
