New car advice

Hey guys, had a test drive in an Octavia 65 plate last week and loved it, so quiet and smooth for a 1.6 diesel! I'll probably be looking at getting a 1.6 se TDI as it has a few more bits and bobs than the s. Is there anything thatbi need to be wary of when buying a used one, more than likely a 15 or 65 is what I will be getting and the estate version as I don't really like the style of the hatchbacks. Advice and opinions are more than welcome:)

Where were you going to buy a used octavia from? If you are looking at an approved used skoda I would consider buying new, especially if you are buying on finance.  Having had a quick look on the AUC site most 1.6SE's around my way are listed for c.£15k.  The new car is listed at just over £19k.  If you were to buy via drive the deal or carwow you would be looking at around a 10% discount plus the £2000 finance contribution along with an interest rate of 2.9%.  Considering how skoda are charging around 10% APR on some used cars you might be shocked at how competively priced a new might well be when it comes to your montly payments!!

EDIT: In fact I've just dug a little deeper and some dealers are selling their used cars at updwards of 15%APR, that would make a used Octavia 1.6SE Estate more per month than my vRS

Yep not much incentive to buy nearly new, unless its very cheap. As new ones are available with big discounts and 0% finance.

I saved over 11% off list price when I ordered my SE Estate 1.4TSi. I did my research and printed off some quotes from Carwow, Drive the Deal and Orangewheels before taking them into my local dealer (West End Skoda) and seeing if they could come close. They came up only £15.00 more than the cheapest online deal (Orangewheels) plus I got 0% finance with a £1000 deposit contribution. I know the 0% finance has now ended, however the deposit contribution has risen to £2000 so it may be the way to go?

sorry guys i kind of stopped looking at new cars for a while as busy with work/family etc.  i wouldnt be getting it on finance, i would be buying the car ourtright, never bought a car on finance nor do i intend to either.  atm its a bit of a juggle between a vw golf estate and a octavia estate, the prices of both have both come down quite a bit in recent weeks.  will have to go have a few more test drives i think as toying with the idea of the dsg auto as well, anyone had experience of the dsg autos in the octavia, and whether its any gd, problems etc? ill be looking to buy with the next few weeks i think

Why not use the 0% finance,  dont give them all your hard earned savings in one go.

Its with VWFS not a loan shark so its safe to use.

Then put your savings in an isa or similar and earn a bit out of them.

Also if there is a major problem with the car you haven't paid for it all and VWFS are obliged to help fix or replace it.

Had a test drive in a vRS estate with DSG when (I thought) I'd already decided on manual.  Just that one drive was sufficient to persuade me that I wanted DSG in my next car, so I'd say to certainly get a test drive with one if you can.  As I've mentioned elsewhere though, driving with DSG does take a certain degree of more finesse with the right foot, as what you do has to tell the car so much more about what you're about to do.
