2006 laurin and klemit broken wing mirror

Featured Replies

right I need some advice again , but this time regarding a broken wing mirror glass, ive removed the casing to fix the non working indicator leds on both my wing mirrors, I was able to revive the drivers side indicator led by cleaning all connections on the tiny pcb with the indicator leds with electrical contact spray and a cotton wool bud or two, as water had gotten in, so I cracked open the bonded hosing to try and fix it as I wasn't gonna lose anyhow as it wasn't functioning, drivers side now sorted

passenger side doesn't seem to want to come back to life,

when I bought the car the passenger wing mirror glass was already broken, but it doesn't seem to be an ordinary mirror glass, it has electrical connector plug, plus 2 wires which look soldered or bonded to it,

is this just for heating, or is it some kind of auto dimming mirror glass?

anyone tell me what part I should be looking for to replace this glass and how to do it

The 2 bonded wires are for the heating element in the mirror. The electrical connector by process of elimination would be the auto dimming feature, as my car doesn't have this and only has the 2 bonded terminals.

When I got a quote from a main dealer for my mirror, I believe I was quoted £55 for just the heated glass. The guy on the end of the phone said the auto dimming one is around 3 times that.

Sorry I don't have any part numbers for you!

Don't ask for the price of an auto dimming mirror glass, it's extortionate, you'll get less for the whole car if you scrapped it!

oh man, not great news at all

thanks for the replies

so what do I do now, just fit a heated one and blank off the auto dimming feature?

would this cause and ill effects elsewhere electrically?

You can get heated glass cheap enough on eBay and just forget about the dimming connection.

I keep hoping to find a MkII L&K in a unsuspecting scrappy but the odds of A. Checking scrappies and B. Finding one with an L&K are slim to none.

So until then the mirror can stay foggy.

thankyou for your help, I love this forum very helpful and informative :D

Around where I lives there's lots of narrow lanes and boy racers, so a smacked mirror is an everyday hazard.

Replaced mine a couple of times with el-cheapo plain Halfrauds mirror glass.  Does the job for a teensy fraction of the price of the original, and no MOT problems either.
