is my timing out?

Featured Replies

Hey guys, got a brain scratcher for you, but getting close to cracking it. With a bit more input from you guys hopefully I'll get there!

The car: 1.8 tsi l&k manual.

The symptoms: engine shudders, ticking noises all over the engine bay, erratic idle, CEL on, code p0341 (camshaft position sensor range/performance)

What I've done: replaced camshaft position sensor, checked regulator wheel, checked wiring (SEAMS ok), cleaned N205 valve.

Bonus info: I bought the car 3 months ago with a piece of tape over the CEL (seams to suggest its been on a while) I found the N205 valve disconnected and when i plug it back in it the engine has more severe of the same symptoms plus a knocking from the valve( actuating like mad, or chain slapping?). Have a receipt from 1 1/2 years ago and 15k miles for a new: chain, tensioner, guides, headgasket and 5 valves.

My thoughts: im thinking the symptoms are from my timing being off. Research shows this could be from a failing tensioner, but with it having a new one not so long ago im skeptical. Im thinking its either a duff ecu or when the chain was done they haven't put the chain back on properly and skipped a tooth.

Any thoughts or suggestions??

Many thanks

Anyone? :/

I would be checking the tensioner. There is a nice video on youtube showing you how it can be checked. Do you have vcds? You can check the timing.

Unfortunately I dont have it, tho I'm looking into it. The chain not being put back properly or a tensioner fail is my thoughts also. Guess im looking for people to confirm what I already know!

Where abouts in the UK are you. Maybe some1 local has vcds.

Norfolk, near kings lynn, thanks

It could be the cam assembly but that a long shot.

Get a vag com or elm 327 & read for faults. Don't experiment, repercussions could be heavy in the wallet.

how much has the car run ?
