Yellow oil warning light - how low does the oil level need to be?

Featured Replies

Hi

How low does the oil need to be before the orange warning light comes on? I checked and topped mine (2.0 petrol vRS) up the other week – the oil was at minimum on the dip stick, but I had had no warning lights on the dash. Would have really expected to see a warning before the oil level reaches minimum.

Thanks

Assuming the level was on minimum whilst the engine was stood / cold then it is quite possible when the engine is running the level wasn't quite low enough to trigger the light.

Doesn't sound as though it was far off coming on though.

I've have never let my oil level get low enough but its normally around the minimum mark from what others have said.

Even at minimum level there is probably enough of a level to cover the pick-up pipe, otherwise the warning would come on earlier.

Try checking your oil more often instead of relying on warnings, if it fails the next warning you will get is low oil pressure and that's not a warning you ever want while driving along.

I had the warning message on my dash a while back. It was following an oil change and I forgot to check after the first drive. On my way home after a motorway drive and it popped up so I quickly pulled over to check.

It was very low! So the warning is clearly not there for the purpose of "your oil is getting low and needs checking" but rather at the point where it's dangerously low.

But regular checks avoids this issue I guess.
