Inoperative cruise control

Featured Replies

Hi,

I just bought a 2007 petrol 1Z vRS.

The cruise control stalk is present but the cruise control doesn't seem to work. I've switched the switch on top of the stalk on and tried both tapping and holding the end rocker in the "Set" (and RESume) positions but the cruise control doesn't kick in.

I assume it did work at one time and is enabled but I don't have VAGCom yet to check. Are there any gotchas that might cause the CCS to fail to engage or common faults with it I can check for please?

Thanks,

Paul.

Very common problem on the Mk2 Octavia, essentially the switch on the wiper stalk fails and stops the cruise working.

There is a guide on here on how to dismantle the stalk and cleanup the cruise switch without even removing the stalk from the car.

Brilliant. Thank you.

I must admit I had been looking at the on-off switch and thinking, "You don't look like the best piece of engineering I've seen."

Does it actually not work or does the light just not come on? Earlier ones up to 2006 at least had no LED behind the icon on the dash.

This is a 2007 1Z vRS. I tried holding it on the throttle, operating the cruise switches then releasing the peddle. There was no light and the car didn't maintain speed.

It's my belief that the cruise control isn't working at all. My friend who was with me, a former mk.1 vRS owner, also tried operating the stalk and said he didn't think it was working.

Manky switches inside the stalk are common. V easy to fix with a couple of cotton buds and some contact cleaner.

Takes about 5min.

As well as the stalk failing could also be brake light switch or clutch switch/sensor

I had the same issue for a good while. Ended up just buying a replacement complete stalk off e-bay and swapping out the switch mechanism. Had cleaned the old one few times, which worked for a while only hence eventually replacing.

Think the new stalk was only about £20

Remember in 2008 when my 2006 Octavia went in for a service and the cruise just stopped working. Advised the then dealer of that at the time and it was fixed under warranty.

Never did ask why it might have just stopped working, but it did.

it used to be a recurrent problem on my Mk2 TDI (2005 MY). Being a CC addict and unwilling to accept poor performance on anything I own, cleaning didn't work for me - the CC worked fine for a year or so, then started missing and then failed completely - this went on for two cleaning sessions. when I got sick and tired of it all, I found a solution elsewere in this forum which suggested resoldering the switch contacts.

After doing that, no more failures, has been working flawlessly for almost two years now and hopefully will continue for eons (or until I sell the car on, whichever comes first).

I'm glad someone listened to me, Lol.

Mine has failed once in about three years after doing this, so re-soldered a little more and fine again now.

Every now and then this happens to me but it appear to fix itself, so I'd call it an intermittent problem at worst.

Could this be the same cause for my issue?

I have had "interesting" occurrences from other electrics (door open warning while driving along!? etc.) and sort of assumed it was a global issue.

I followed the CRUISE Control PDF instructions to fix my MKII 06 VRs and the Cruise is now working perfectly. The Black carbon type contacts on the board were quite dirty. I had to use a T8 Torx bit to undo the screws by the way. It was a very easy fix and thanks to whoever wrote the PDF document. John

Afternoon, I'm having similar issues with the CC on my 2007 Octy II Elegance Estate.

I've tried cleaning the switch following the great PDF document but unfortunately there's still no signs of life.

What would be the next thing people would check to try and get to the bottom of the issue?

Cheers

I ended up putting solder on the contacts of my switch. It has worked ever since............. Possibly you could try a new switch.

Thanks Tilt,

Do you mean on the 4 long contacts the slider goes against or the contacts on the end where it plugs into the wires?

Was it ust a little blob to improve the contact they make?
