Car broken into?

Featured Replies

Gone to go out in the car tonight and needed to use the satnav. I hardly ever use it so it was left in there along with the cradle and the cigarette charger, gone to grab it this evening and Glovebox is empty. No satnav, no charger, no cradle, no iPhone charger?

I live in a pretty good area and the car is parked right outside my living room and bedroom window. Can't tell exactly when it was taken as again I barely use it but it never leaves the car. I'm the only one who drives the car so no one else goes in there.

The thing that stumps me is having lived in east London all my life I'm really particular about making sure the car is locked. I've checked the car and all doors lock when the car is locked.

The thing that is annoying me even more (other than the mild annoyance of losing a £60 Garmin system) is that there is no sign of forced entry? No broken glass, no damage to door locks, no damage to door etc? So how did they get in?

I'm sorry to hear what happened. How long was it parked there? When was the last time you used the sat nav and could someone have taken it if you didn't lock the door while you were paying at somewhere like a petrol station?

Could of had a scanner that picked up the radio signals when you locked the car?

I lock the car even when at a petrol station unless wife and kids are with me.

In terms of how long, I think it's been around 2 weeks since I last used it so difficult to pinpoint an exact place and time. :(

Very good point! Sometimes it might be way easier than people think...

I did think of that tbh.

How close to the car would they have to be in order to get it to work?

I don't know to be honest. I'd hazard a guess in saying probley about the same range as the key holder.

VAG cars are trivial to pop open. VAG put a court order on the researcher to stop them publishing their findings. As far as I am aware no fix is being considered. This includes all the VAG group right up to Bentley and Lamborghini.

That's nice, so there's no way to prevent it or secure against it other than not leaving "ANYTHING" in the car?

If someone has "scanned the car" can they keep that information indefinitely? Obviously my main concern now is the addresses that are saved in the satnav especially "home" as that could mean that if it has not been done outside the house that they could then return for another try or the car itself?

I know this is of no use to you now, with regards to portable satnavs never input your home address under HOME. I would apply the same principal with WORK. I enter an address a few streets before my actual one.

Is there any businesses or homeowners adjacent to you or whose property overlooks yours that has cctv?

No I live in OAP central though so plenty of curtain twitchers :giggle:

Yes when they have it they have it.

Satnavs I was recommended to set 'home' to be the local police station.

I once found a bundle of keys in a car park. Not only did it have the registration of the car written on it but also the home address and keys for both.

Their telly was crap though so I just left it.
