No Claims bonus confusion (new driver)

Featured Replies

Hi there, so I'm looking for a bit of advice - I've been driving for about 9 months now. I've had my car for that full 9 months under the same policy and my year is up in July for which I would earn my first year of no claims. I'm looking for a to buy a new car and I'm wondering if I was to sell my car now and get a new one before July would I be able to take that 9 months over with me to a new insurer or would it make more sense to wait till July before getting a new car?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Wait. If you sell your car now you need to tell your insurers, and then you won't get your NCB as only complete years count.

That's what I was asking! Thanks :)

Or get a new car now and change your current policy to the new car.....assuming your current insurers will cover it

No claims is a little bit irrelevant in my experience (okay, I'm well into 30 years on the road), but I ran a comparison check recently for a new policy on a specific vehicle. With 9 years no claims, £308 please. With 9 years no claims on a company vehicle, £310 please. With zero no claims, Ah, that'll be £315 please.

Not sure I follow. If you sell old car for cash and then look for new car then you can't carry over months earned, but if you were to buy the new car before selling the old, then you could transfer policy and months.

After July, when you've got a full year earned, then you can sell the old car, and there's a period when you can insure the new one with a year's NCD.

As to its relevance (to premium) I'm not sure there's much, but it can be relevant to whether or not you can get a quote at al on the new car.
