Rear brake calliper

Featured Replies

Hi everyone, this is my first post and I am not very mechanically minded so please go easy on me :)

2 years ago I had a sticking rear calliper on my 1996 Octavia so I took it to my local garage and expected them to strip it down and clean it up but they put a new one on instead.

I discovered last week that the same calliper was leaking fluid from the area where the handbrake mechanism enters it.

I took it back to the garage today and they said it was a seal that is actually part of the calliper and have fitted yet another new calliper.

Surely a seal could be replaced ? Could someone please confirm for me if this sounds right.

Many thanks

Yes, you can get seal kits but garages just fit new calipers as it's easier and quicker.

To strip and clean the caliper then replace seals takes around an hour. Fitting a new caliper half that time.

You can get seal kind for not much money from Big Red in Worcester, Google them.

Very helpful. They also sell refurbished ones or they can refurbish yours.

Replaced my main piston seals not long ago, very easy to do.

Might be worth talking to them to get some advice on how to replace the seal that's leaking. Or have a look on YouTube for a tutorial.

P.s it's worth getting some new bleed nappies at the same time. Mine was stuck solid and I managed to damage the flats a little, so I'll be replacing the bleed nappies next time I have to do something like that again.

Thanks for the replies guys. I guess I'll just pay the bill this time but be wiser for next time.

You could always source the caliper yourself and ask them to for it for you.
