Super Trouper

Super Trouper beams are gonna blind me

But I won't feel blue

Like I always do

'Cause somewhere in the crowd there's you

I was sick and tired of everything

When I called you last night from Glasgow....

ABBA. Some band,eh?

Well I'm calling you from Glasgow tonight, but far from being sick and tired of everything, I'm feeling well and full of beans, ready to embrace the Briskoda forum as I'm soon to purchase a Skoda Superb.

Tickety-boo!

Now that's certainly a different intro from most, I was wondering where that was going.....! Hi there and welcome! What year Superb are you purchasing?

Hi Superb 170,

I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place. I'm going to do some private hire work but I am trying to make a decision between an DSG Automatic or a Manual. I am further torn because there is also the problem of the Third Gen Superb making an appearance recently.

So I have to decide just how much more pleasurable it will be to drive a DSG rather than having to constantly extend and retract my left leg, and throw the gearstick with my left arm.

For financial reasons (I'm unsure what my earnings will be) I'm only willing to buy a Third Gen Manual SE Business 1.6 TDI. If I was to go down the DSG (with its greater cost) route I'd probably have to drop down to a 2015 Second Gen but I'd probably be able to get full leather interior, which would clean quicker and easier than cloth.

To make matters worse I've seen a few nice estates, which I had never even considered before but offer even greater choice, but are a bit dearer than hatchbacks.

I'll have to search to see if there are any threads relating to the suitability of the Superb for taxiing in Manual v DSG form (the long, city based hours are different to those of businessmen cruising up motorways). Otherwise I'll have to create one.

I assume from your post that you are going to be doing mostly urban work as opposed to long distance?  I'd imagine the DSG is a must in stop/start traffic around a city however, maybe ask this question in the 'Taxi-rank' section  http://www.briskoda.net/forums/forum/326-the-taxi-rank/.   The guys on there will certainly be able to guide you with their experience.  DSG will be more expensive if it goes wrong - would your warranty (I presume you would have a specific taxi warranty) would cover that in full?  Having said that, DSG is far more reliable that this forum might suggest - remember you get the more critical comments on here sometimes and not necessarily the more positive experiences.

I'd imagine my driving will be mostly in the city centre but, having said that, Glasgow is a lot smaller than London and has three motorways within a short distance of the centre.

I drove an automatic 4.6 litre V8 when I lived in Arizona for 6 months so I appreciate how simple driving becomes, but I'm probably going to end up a Manual because I'll get more toys, and because I've read on here about the lower powered DSGs having a delay that makes jumping into traffic gaps more difficult.

Thanks for your reply, I'll go and browse through the forum you linked.

Welcome to the forum.

You might get the information you need in the 'Taxi Rank' in the General Car Chat Section,

or the Superb sections of the forum.

Specifically in the taxi rank is the lack of power/mpg from the 1.6 in something with the bulk of the superb to haul around...
