You need to find out what the error codes are somehow... You can do this by finding somebody local and friendly with VAG Com (bribe them with beer) or by going to your dealers. vag com is a diagnostics app that runs on a laptop and plugs into your car...

Once you've got the error codes you'll have a good idea of whats up and then you can work on fixing it

yes, theres a bug in the ECU which causes them to breakdown on at least one bank holiday

we have finally got the problem sorted, it was the ignition coil on the middle cylinder.

apparently there was a recall notice on the Polo for the coils, but I haven't heard of one for the Fabia.
