clutch problem

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

What do you make of this.

Mk1 octavia 53 plate 159832 miles.

Just had my clutch system and master cylinder changed.

Opted to go for SMF.

Complete kit.

Both rear callipers.

Brake fluid changed.

My clutch still doesn't, work correctly.

Cannot get 1st gear.

Wants to pull away whith clutch fully depressed.

This happens once I have driven for about half an hour.

OK from cold.

Jeffoldbean.

Clutch isn't disengaging and is dragging. So its either been fitted wrong, the wrong parts have been used, or there is an issue with the hydraulics such as air in the system.

I do not think the clutch is fitted incorrectly.

Maybe the choice of SMF, instead of the original DMF is incorrect.

The clutch has been bled more than once.

And air has not been found.

The rear callipers needed changing, and have been changed.

All the callipers have been bled.

Refressing the brake fluid, thoughout.

The clutch master cylinder was changed.

Just in case air was getting in from the original one.

Jeffoldbean.

Sounds like either incorrect parts or plate in backwards then, not much else it can be if the hydraulics are operating correctly

Slave Cylinder?

What was the original clutch problem before it was changed?

What engine does is have?

Originally,

There were times when I could not get the stick out of 1st, or reverse.

Then last March ish when we had the really cold spell.

I noticed the clutch slipped, when I put my foot down.

So I decided to kill two birds with one stone.

And got the clutch changed.

Jeffoldbean.

Damaged or bent clutch release fork?.

Hi,

I can't see any mention of the slave cylinder being changed (unless part of clutch system) which could have been the cause of the original fault (1st & reverse)

Yes the clutch kit included Flywheel Clutch Plate And CSC.

Engine is the good old 1.9 TDI.

Since the Master Cylinder gets supplied from the Brake Master Cylinder Reservoir.

What would happen if the Filler Pipe, whatever it is called.

Was gummed/furred up.

As when I am coming to rest in 1st gear.

Still with the clutch pedal fully down.

When I apply the foot brake.

The clutch plate somehow is coming into contact with the flywheel.

And the car is trying to move forwards.

This happens in my drive.

Which is uphill.

The car doesn't, stall.

I cannot get it out of gear.

I have to switch off.

This seems to be some kind of brake and clutch operated together problem.

Is the CMS being starved of break fluid pressure?

Ah it must be the 6 speed box with Concentric Slave Cylinder with built in release bearing so there is no release fork (the 5 speed ones usually have an external slave cylinder/release fork/ separate release bearing). These are easy to misfit/damage . Also were the input shaft splines damaged by the old clutch in some way? - The clutch plate needs to be free otherwise either the pressure plate or the flywheel could remain in contact with the friction material. I've seen this happen before causing premature and catastrophic failure of the pressure plate due to metal fatigue (was being pushed to one side every time clutch pedal depressed)

Is there a possibility that the wrong SMF/pressure plate combination has been fitted?

I doubt it will be anything to do with the master cylinder reservoir unless it's empty - The fluid is simply fed by gravity to the clutch master cylinder

Hi again big John.

I let my mechanic deal with the acquiring of the clutch kit.

It was decided after a discussion.

To fit the SMF.

But what make/version, was left to the wonders of modern science.

IE what the Reg No came up with,I suppose.

Would you know exactly the kit required.

I am coming round to the possibility.

That we will have to start all over again.

Nice brakes shame about the clutch EHHH.

Jeffoldbean.

Check with the dealer re clutch parts, I'm sure there is an official SMF replacement for the 1.9 pd
