Creak when changing gear on cold starts

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Every time I get in my car in the mornings (engine and oils cold) I get a creaking sound and a shudder when I change into 2nd and 3rd at about 2500-3000 rpm.  It feels like when I hit the clutch (slowly or quickly) the sudden change of torque causes a quick shudder and a creak from the lower engine bay. It sounds central, but quite low down.  Interestingly, it's the same creaking I'm getting when I go over speed bumps which initially thought was just a knackered shock mount/bearing.

What could it be? Could it be the lower engine mount, which could perhaps also account for the shuddering I get at idle? I'm reluctant to strongly think that this is the fault, as the creak on gear change disappears after about 1.5-2 miles, once the oils are up to temp. However, the creaking over speed bumps seems to happen almost always so it couldn't just be a coincidence that they both make the same sound...

Cheers!

Bump.  Only happens from cold starts in the mornings, so could it be condensation on the DMF or something?

Does your car have an engine roll restrictor (usually a big bar running front to rear from gearbox to body)?

Check that and the engine/gearbox mounts.

I'll take a look. I don't recall seeing anything of that description, but I'll check as soon as I can get under the car. Should be able to do that tonight.

EDIT: Unless you mean this, in which case, yes it does:
