Exhaust Inspection System warning light on

After 6 years of faultless performance on my 2010 TDi CR Scout, I got my first warning light yesterday.  The exhaust inspection system warning light  did not go off.  I left the car overnight and as the car was still showing the same error this morning, I hooked my car up to VCDS, ran diagnostics and got a clean bill of health, except for:

I saved the log and then cleared the fault.  Removed the ignition key, left it a few seconds, restarted the car and the light has gone off.

 

The manual suggests the following course of action:

 

If the warning light does not go out after starting the engine or it lights up when driving, a fault exists in an exhaust relevant component. The engine management system selects an emergency programme which enables you to drive to the nearest specialist garage by adopting a gentle style of driving.

 

However, there is no noticeable degradation in vehicle performance.

 

Any suggestions for next steps?  Ignore for now and keep an eye on it?  Take it to my dealer immediately?  What's the likely cause and cost to fix, assuming it's something in need of repair?

More than likely a pedal needed. But it's work checking the wiring isn't pulled tight or got snagged on something.

Hi there have you still got a problem with exhaust warning light or is it ok now.Had same thing last week did same as you wiped memory light went out for 1 day came back on off on its own for 2 days then been back on now for 2 days, going to get garage to do in depth check on it.

The problem returned after a day or so, so I've got it booked in for investigation tomorrow. I'll report back on what my dealer does to fix the issue.

Well, that was an expensive exercise!  My dealer ran their own diagnostics and confirmed a fault with the throttle position sensor, requiring a new throttle unit.  They removed the intake hose, replaced the throttle unit, reassembled, tested and then cleared the fault.  All up, it cost me NZ$843.53 (or about £410).  And that was with a 20% discount!  That's the first bill I've had apart from 2 services, in almost 6 years of ownership, so I probably shouldn't complain.  Hopefully, it's not the start of the slippery slope...

Garage found diesel filter clogged up poured bottle of diesel particulate filter cleaner in & run for 15 mins @ 3000 revs 70 mph,stopped car took key out left for 10mins then started up & light gone, got to do this every 3000 miles if you are only doin short journeys I've been advised.
