1.2 Notchy/Crunching gear change 2nd/3rd/4th

Featured Replies

When my fabia is cold the gearchange is smooth and works fine, but after about 20 mins of driving when things get warm its notchy getting 2nd/3rd/4th and often crunches or has to be forced into gear.

I have followed the video to realign the gear lever with the gearbox and it improved things slightly. I have also had a new clutch fitted which made no difference.

Any suggestions before I stump up for a new gearbox ? Its an '04 on 60k so be surprised if the gearbox has failed.

Have you checked the gearbox oil level? It's also possible someone has put the wrong oil in it.

Its going in for some work in a few weeks I'll ask them to drain and replace the gearbox oil see what that does, certainly be cheaper than a new box if it improves things !

Just to close this off, it was getting difficult to find any gears so took it to a gearbox place. They took it apart and found the syncromesh worn out/failed on most of the gears and also the diff was falling apart. Recon gearbox and some new cogs in the diff should solve it, picking it up end of the week.

That's VW so-called quality for you :@
