DSG Gearbox Triangle Symbol

Featured Replies

Hello all,

Have a new VRS with the DSG gearbox.  Can someone please explain to me the significance of the inverted triangle below the D/S mark beside the gear lever.  The manual describes it as 'sprung' position and it looks as if the lever should move backwards but I can't make it move.

Clearly I'm having a dense moment and would appreciate an explanation.

Cheers in advance.

With the gear shift in "Drive" you can then pull the stick back in the direction of the arrow to put the transmission into "sport" mode - indicated on Maxidot by the gear indicator changing from "D" to "S"

This shift is spring-loaded and won't hold position - it will just move back to a hard stop and then spring forward back to "Drive" when you let go. If you do this a second time, it will return the shift mode to normal.

You can also push the stick away from you towards the passenger seat (on a right hand drive car) when in drive and it will then sit in manual shift mode and allow you to use the gear stick to shift up and down through the gears as an alternative to using the steering paddles. Pull the stick back towards you again to disengage and return to "Drive"

Cheers

Thanks, so no need to push the button, just a firm pull?   Too anxious in case I broke it!

You only need to engage the button when moving between Park/Reverse/Neutral/Drive.

Once in Drive the stick should move easily back toward the arrow into the spring loaded postition with no force required and a very light resistance - it will spring right back as soon as you release.

If you feel you have to force it, something isn't quite right!

To add, it doesn't move back that far - just a little "flick"

Thanks again.

Shall try it on the way home.

Did the dealer not go through this stuff with you?

Er... read the manual?

There's a section on manual selection of gears, depending on the manual it's round page 134.

And one of the positions switches between normal settings and sport.

Did the dealer not go through this stuff with you?

My dealer has never shown me anything on my cars, he knows there's no need now but he couldn't have known my level of knowledge when I bought my first car.

The dealer went through much at night and I reached saturation point.  He may have mentioned it but I can't remember.  My previous car was 10 years old and the technology has moved on somewhat, there was much to learn!  Have always driven manuals before.

I read the manual several times and honestly I really do not think it is clear what is does ie toggling between normal and sport (without the annoying pretend engine noise) but maybe it's me.

As to the drive home last night works exactly as Item described.  Thanks very much.

You'll also see the gear symbol at top right in the maxidot display change from "5" (or whatever gear you're in) to "S5"
