front Caliper

Featured Replies

just been doing front discs and pads, all ok about from one thing the Caliper slide that the Caliper slides on has striped in side the hub side it will not tighting up can I still drive this ok or how can this be fixed

What had stripped, the caliper bolt, carrier bolt or something else, sorry not sure as you mention toward the hub?

I would say new calliper time then.

And it may be ok to drive for a short while, but I definitely would not say safe to drive.

It would not pass MOT if known fault and your insurance company would 'throw the book at you' if you had an accident and tried to claim.

As you do your own stuff, buy a calliper and fit yourself, so long as you weren't the one that stripped the threads, otherwise take it to a garage.

The 'slide pin', as I read it, although how someone has managed to strip the threads, god only knows!

Is it located properly? Sometimes the bolt/slide pin will just spin if the holes aren't lined up, especially if the other has been tightened

I assume that you mean that the bolt that hold to brake caliper to the caliper bracket - ie the threads are striiped in the caliper bracket if so repair the damage thread with helicoil, you will have to remove the caliper bracket, drill out the damage thread retap with a helicoil tap and insert the helicoil - the bolt size is M12 x 1.5 x 35 and is a shortcut to a helicoil kit

Probably needs a helicoil now. Readily available, M9 is the one you want.

well got me 2nd hand hub from local scrap yard took it off for me to, well drive shaft  caliper  all for 20quid and booked in garage for 3pm cost 20quid so 40 quid seems fair,,,

well looks like the hubs I got were not right ones I tried 2 no joy so looks like it might be down to the   helicoil now so people are saying use M9 is this right, and do I just use the old pins well one ,so iam getting this right drill tap and stick m9 in hole snap lug of then use my old bolt

That's correct. The helicoil kit comes with the correct drill bit and tap to use.

get repair kit...drill, tap and thread insert

I see that some people have used m9 kit and others have used m12 kit. Can either be used or which would be listed for a 2010 mk2 Octavia 1.6tdi
