any way to reclaim a private reg plate off a non-mot'd car?

Featured Replies

hi all, i have a pretty tight situation

my old car which is sat on my grandmother's drive has my private registration but has run out of mot ( i didn't realise it had to be mot'd to reclaim at the time) i would get it mot'd but it will be rather hard as the auto gearbox has failed making it hard to drive, its been sat there for a year so i'm guessing various components may of perished but i think it might need quite a bit of work doing to it in general anyway.

Is there any way at all i can get the reg plate transferred?

Thought this kind of thing would be be straight forward, I'd assume that it's just a case of calling DVLA and switching the registration back to the original manufacturer's registration.

I think it's to stop people avoiding paying a retention fee by transferring a plate to an old scrapper.

Glancing at the dvla site, it appears that the car needs to be of a type that would need an MOT and either needs to be taxed, or have been taxed and now be on SORN. Depending on which page, that SORN needs to have been less than a year or less than 5 years.

Ask the DVLA how to do it?
