Sat nav with excellent traffic info, to replace Bolero?

Featured Replies

Hi,

I'm looking for a really good sat nav with excellent/accurate traffic updates.

Starting new job, long distance, and want to jump into car and get going, without fecking around with my phone cabling it in, turning on GPS, messing around with an app etc :)

I've currently got one of these in my 2012 Octavia:

I want something that switches on/off with ignition, and is wired into the power - I don't want to be mucking around with cables.

I don't mind doing a bit of "plumbing" with cabling etc, but nothing too hardcore.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Cheers

I kinda wanted something better than a phone though. Even if I had a dedicated phone just for the Sat Nav, I'd still have to plug it into power socket, start the App up, etc, etc, have a data SIM contract.....

  • I want to avoid having to play with phone settings
  • I don't want a power cable trailing from the power socket
  • Want something that is fixed in place rather than stuck to a windscreen

I've got a mega commute coming up and just want to save as much time as possible, faffing around with sat nav on my phone.

I was hoping I could just jump in car and have the sat nav fire up, etc.

I know some of the manafacturer satnavs can be a bit basic though.

I'm guess I'm kinda thinking about Android head units.....

One of the current range of TomTom units, Brodit dash mount and wire USB charger through to a switched live?

TomTom Traffic works well for me. So all you'd need to do would be pop the TomTom onto the standard magnetic mount it ships with and away you go.

Being able to program routes via your phone or tablet remotely is very handy too.

Ok, yeah, tomtom units look good.

Looking at the GO 6100.

How does the magnetic mount attach to the Brodit dash mount?  Does it stick out far from the dash?

How does that clip onto:

Oh, or are you supposed to buy this too, and screw onto the mount?

I have the 5100, so just a slightly smaller screen

Can't see a link in your 2nd post there, but the TT mount basically splits in two, at the ball cup. So then that connects into the Brodit mount.

I can get you some links for what I got - it'll be the same for the 6100.

Whereabouts are you? If it works geographically, you can see it in situ.

Thanks.

Sounds like I need:

https://www.brodit.co.uk/brodit/holders/TomTom/GO+6100/215682.htm

and

https://www.brodit.co.uk/brodit/vehicles/Skoda/Octavia+II/2012/653525.htm

then.

£56 in total.....hmmm, quite pricey....

I guess the 5100 would be lighter, and less strain on the mount...i.e less likely to move by itself.

Do you have the power cable hooked up into your electrics directly?  If so, how easy is that to do?

I'm in Sunny Milton Keynes, but thanks for the offer of viewing yours :)

You don't really need the top one, that's the 'active' mount. I'd just the one I linked to, take the standard USB cable that's supplied and hook that upto one of these:

Then into one of these: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/180735526749?_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

To give your permanent setup. Or you can route the USB cable to the cigarette lighter area, and control power from there. If you don't want to make any electrical changes.

I have the correct Octy ProClip, for side of Bolero fitment - you can have for a fiver. So that helps reduce your costs :)

Ah, ok, gotcha :)

What's the angled side proclip like?  You didn't find it too low?

I was looking at the higher centre mount, which I think that would make for easier quick glancing at.

Thanks a lot for all the tips here :)

I found it spot on - satnav sits around the height of the 'Radio' button on the Bolero, to give you an idea.

With the larger 6100 screen it'll be very clear I reckon. In the centre it might be too much in your face :)

Nope. Same screw fitment (T10 Torx) exists at the top.

Will see if I have any photos, of when I had it setup in the Octy. Was an older version TT I had then, but same principle applies.

Had a sit in the car today and, yes, I think you're right, the positioning does seem pretty good.

I'll have a think over that 5100, but if I do go ahead and purchase it, I'll drop you a note, as I'd definitely take that clip off your hands if it is still available.

Thanks again for all the advice, very much appreciated!! :)

No probs - keep us updated :)

I forgot I still had that ProClip to be honest, so just let me know if you want it. If not I'll stick an ad up
