Vibration on idle

Featured Replies

Hi there. This is my 1st post and, indeed, my first day as a member. Just want to say what a great site this is. I've already been able to reconnect my rear wash wipe (which popped off in the cold weather) within approximately 10 seconds, thanks to the info posted by drivers here!

Anyway, a more serious problem (I think). I have a 1.4 (8V) and on idle, the car suffers from a slight, but definite, vibration from the engine. When ticking over, there is a slight vibration from the engine every couple of seconds which can be felt when sitting in the car. There is very little change (if any at all) in the amount of rev's. I say this only happens on idle because I can't tell whether it is or not when driving due to the usual ride vibrations. Also, it doesn't matter whether I've been driving for 1 minute or for 4 hours, it does it regardless.

Maybe, in some way, this is connected to the slight coolant leak I'm suffering from (not me, the car!). I have to top it up every so often (once a fortnight) but haven't had a chance to look into the problem further. Does anyone think or know if the two are related? If you've suffered from this or know anything about it, any and all advice would be much appreciated!

Thanks!!

I have also have the same problem as yourself however I think that (I could be wrong) is that this vibration is just a standard "feature"for this engine.I think its due to the EU emissions law that most new car idle at lower RPM`s in order to reduce CO2 emissions etc.

My old Renault 19 idle about 400-500 higher than my Fabia.I havent had any problems with my fabia although I have only had it two months.I had to top up the coolant yesterday but Im not sure if this will be a common thing.Hope this helps

We once had a 1.4 16v it did the same on tick over.........The EU keeps on resetting itself

Thanks for the replies guys...I appreciate it. I was wondering if it was maybe an 'alien substance' getting into the combustion chamber and not combusting, hence the vibration. That would be worrying!! I'm going to have a good search for any signs of the coolant leak and anything else which may be causing the vibration. I'll post the results here so if any one else suffers from anything similar, they may be able to cure it....if it is a problem in the 1st place! The EU emissions theory could well be the right one. The only thing that's making me doubt it is that I've not heard about this happening before, with any car. That could be down to my lack of knowledge though!

Cheers again!!

Yeah m8 I have a 1.4 8v as well, does the same stuttering at idle,I was told it was a Characteristic of the fabia engine. Its the EU controling the emissions.

After a thorough investigation yesterday, I found nothing to make me think there is anything else wrong with the car and have to conclude that it is what you guys suggested it is; the engine management system and EU emission settings. I had the sparks plugs out, checked everywhere for a coolant leak and basically crawled around the engine bay until I was satisfied that it was nothing more than some recommendations from people in Brussels which was making the car vibrate.

Thanks again for the help fella's.

IIRC all the 8 valves do it coz of the VVT thingimajigi. Normal I should say. I have a 2.0 litre 8V that always has been vibrating in idle.

8v's with VVT, now you are having a laugh..lol

Mine does the same thing. It's a 1.4 16valve Octavia. Judders like a **** when it's idleing. I won't be buying another Skoda. I think they were better before VW got their hand on them with their (so called) and undeserved reputation for reliability.

To be fair the 16v isnt the best. But there are things that can be set up to improve things. EGR and the throttle body are two of them.

My 1.6 8v VW Bora did the same thing. Clean out the throttle body and it was OK again for a few months...

I ain't no mechanic so I have a right to mess up on my statements ;) You on the other hand, DON'T :D I just know for a fact that all 8V cars judder like that.

Or change the f**king engine and put something usefull in there. VW=****. I think I'll try a Ford.

Whoa....where'd he ^ come from?

Calm down man. We are ALL here to be helpful and have a laugh.....Arnt we?
