Went to the cinema, car running fine. Came out of the cinema, car runs really rough and chugs. Gets home, pulls plugs out the following day... I think it's game over!

Game over for that plug.

How long have they been in?

Fit 4 new DENSO Spark Plugs, and 'Continue Game'.

Plug has been in about 2 months at the most. It's absolutely caked in wet oil, looks like i have big problems! Had a compression test done this morning and cylinder 2 (looking from the front of the car into the engine bay) is way down from the rest. It's smoking that much, it'd be a great James Bond car! Looks like a rebuild is on the cards :(

So tell that tale.

CAVE or CTHE, how many miles,  ever had a Breaher Pipe / Valve Mod, ECU Update, New Oil Spray Jets (squirters).

Rebuild of the block is not going to be much good if the head / Valves are also bad.

If the car is eligible, ie Service History and not Modified and since it has no fualts, buy a 12 month Skoda Warranty.

CAVE, 56k miles, hasn't had the breather pipe mod under my ownership but may have been done under the previous owner (which was actually VW). It had an ecu update when it went in for a new throttle body a few months ago.

I've been getting quotes for a complete rebuild, there's no point in just replacing what's at fault while the engine is in bits anyway.

I've had a compression test done this morning and cylinder 2 is waaaay down compared to the rest. I've been told it's likely that the piston has cracked. :(

I'm surprised how quickly it happened. Was fine when I parked it up and a couple of hours later, it's dying a death!

More likely the rings gone, then possible the valves are burnt out, actually it can be anything so yes a strip down will tell,

and a camera in the spark plug hole would be quick and give an idea for much less expence.

Maybe still need the head off, but worth a scope in the cylinder.

Yup I had a plug like that after about 6 weeks, mind it did have a dodgy coil on that cylinder so I'm not sure if that helped, but the fact mine was also using oil, and SUK were not interested meant I got shot!, lost a load of cash, but learnt a lesson and touchwood happy with the new car

I've had a quote for a full rebuild minus new injectors from Midland VW, just waiting to hear back from Awesome GTI and then it's decision time as to who I go with. It's more than I want to spend but at least I'll have peace of mind for a few more years (and I will be keeping it after forking that kind of money out on it!!).

In fact, I wonder if a 1.8t conversion would work out cheaper... Haha!

Do you know what the head looks like yet?

  • Author

No, not yet but my thinking is to just get the lot rebuilt anyway while it's all apart.

The big day has come, time to take the girl to Midland VW... Hopefully they don't find anything else wrong, there aren't enough pennies in the kitty if they do!

Any news on this today?

No, I probably won't hear anything until the end of this week. Their master technician is off this week but from what I gather, they're going to start stripping the engine down this week, ready for him to start building it back up at the start of next week.

?

What are they quoting as a minimum if it is the least required for a bottom end rebuild,

Piston, Rings, bearings, gaskets etc ?

For the rebuild inc timing chain kit and updated tensioner, valve seals, strip, polish and complete rebuild on the head, updated Pistons, new plugs, updated injectors comes to £2995.

For all of the above, minus the injectors (which is what I've gone for) is £2225.

You can buy a new from the factory VW Base Engine with Head on for that first price & that has a 2 year Warranty.

No idea about updated Injectors but with latest Oil Spray Jets.

Yes but then you have the added labour cost of transferring all the bolt ons over and swapping the engines. I'd love to be a bottomless pit of money but I'm not. I get a warranty with the work carried out anyway and Midland VW know their way around the twincharged engines so I don't have any concerns.

Fair enough.  They will be fitting the latest Oil Spray Jets then and the latest Software,

Good luck.

Plenty were given rebuilds by Seat, VW & Skoda in 2010 & 2011 before short engines were fitted under warranty and then Base Engines, but they were very low mileage engines that were failing.
