12 V 'Cigar Lighter' accessory socket

Featured Replies

Hi everyone,

It seems that the 12 V socket in my 2010 Superb remains live even when the ignition is switched off and the car locked.  This came to light when I plugged my new dashcam in - I noticed it was still recording once I'd parked up.

Is it possible to rewire the socket so that it turns off with the key?  Is it easy to do?

All suggestions welcome.

Not so easy. It's easier to route the dashcam power cable to your fusebox, and then use piggy back fuse to draw power from an existing switched fuse. This way you'll keep the cigarette lighter unoccupied.

Thanks Eyegr,

I had thought about this, but apparently the plug on the dashcam steps down the voltage - they specifically tell you NOT to wire it in directly.

You can buy simple 12v to 5v DC step down converters with USB connectors on the other end for wiring directly into the fuse box.  Try eBay.  I got one from China for a couple of quid as I recall.

Thanks adamal and Kenny - those are great ideas.  I'm thinking of using the female cig socket as that means I dont have to hack the original plug off the unit.

Does anyone know:  1.if there are any unused (switched) fuse sockets in the Superb's fusebox and 2. is there enough room to stow the female socket plus miles of wire behind the dash?

Thanks, Hashi

One more question - is there any risk of setting off the airbags when prising off trim around the dashboard?  I see a switch to deactivate the front passenger seat airbag.
