Unknown aluminium part at bottom

Featured Replies

Hello everyone,

recently I have a problem while driving, the stone on the road hit accidentally to the bottom of the car. Then I founded that unknown part was damaged, it is made from aluminium and have a form like a radiator, the damaged ridges is visible at photos. Also I can see the pipe connected to this part. Maybe someone can advice what is that device? That is situated  near the front right wheel, directly under passenger seat.

Thank You.

I have no idea what that is. But is does answer why I got a wrong under try from the dealers once. The one I got had that huge section missing from it like yours. Could it be some kind of oil cooler.

Is your car a Diesel?

I think it is a Fuel radiator, as the fuel is pumped to the fuel rail it absorbs some heat from the engine and then carries that heat as it returns to the fuel tank. A radiator is fitted under the car to cool the Diesel as it returns to the fuel tank.

Id check its not leaking :)

Yes, the fuel is diesel.

The car was left over the night, and there was no fuel traces on the ground or this radiator. But it is slightly bent itself, not only the ridges were damaged. So it must be replaced at nearest opportunity, in your opinion?

Thanks.

My car is a diesel, it doesn't have this part.

My car is 2004-dec made, so maybe there can be a difference :notme:

Yours is a CR rather than a PD though, which is likely the difference.

If the car drives without issues then it must still be able to flow fuel at an acceptable rate, so leave it as long as it doesn't leak? I've broken many PD Seat Ibizas and some of these units have obviously taken a knock due to where they are and the car has still been driven around :)

fuel cooler underneath of driver (in Europe). Maybe it is on other side in UK.

If you have developed feeling for car and your car feels different over winter...replace it.

No fuel leak - no fear.

This pish doesn't help too much anyway. My Skoda Octavia HR I fitted with Polar FIS + shows around 70deg C fuel temp, which is good for diesel cars. Fuel ignites with ease

Thank You for advice. After of few days of using the car I have not noticed any leakage and difference while driving. I think to replace it later, on next service work before winter.

Common rail engines don't have the fuel cooler as it doesn't pick up as much heat from the engine.

The PD engines heated up the fuel a lot as it travelled through the cylinder head.

I wouldn't bother replacing it, most of the fins are still there and these cars are sold in much hotter climates so you should be ok.

There is normally a fuel thermostat anyway which returns fuel to the filter if its not hot enough to be recirculated to the pump/injectors. On the older cars this used to be on the fuel filter but I don't know if they have got rid of it or it is somewhere else
