Gearbox change - 5 to 6 speed

Featured Replies

HI folks

Got a question I couldn't find an answer for, though I have only spend 20 mins looking so forgive me if its an oldy.

Is it possible to swap a Fabia 2 5 speed gear box for a 6 speed one?  I've got the 80 bhp 1.4 tdi model reg'd '08.

We're gonna keep our car and maintain it forever (if poss) instead of changing for anything bigger.  I've seen there's some performance mods about to boost bhp which I'd like to try over time too.  Any advice on those?

Cheers folks.

Bob

In theory the six speed 02M box should fit.

Not sure you would actually get any benefit from it though.

I believe the extra gear is between 2nd and 3th, or 3th and 4th and not an extra long top gear.

In my old Touran I was forever changing gear, and researched fitting a 5 speed.

That's interesting, so it's not really a quieter top gear but more fannying about between the lower gears.  Seems daft.

My hope was I could mod the engine and get the same mpg as I have now.  NM.

If you successfully tune your engine for more bhp / better performance that is not going to mean you use more fuel if you drive the same as you do now.

the NSL will be the same as now so 60/70 mph will still be you max speed, maybe a sneaky 80 mph.

Lots of tuned cars use less fuel since you get up to speed and just go with the flow not needing to boot it everyplace.

Really? I suppose now you've said that it seems obvious. If engine is working more efficiently there's less need to push it?

In my head better performance = more gas guzzle.

The older 6 speed boxes (prior to 2004 ish) on the MK1 Fabia vRS and other PD130 cars had a very long 6th gear and was much higher geared than the 5 speed.

Since then that's changed and basically the 6 speed boxes usually have the same top gear ratio just more gears crammed in to give you a wider spread of ratios.

I also know that my 6 speed DSG revs at the same RPM at 70 mph as a 5 speed manual version.

You would need to find the specs on your gearbox and the proposed replacement and look up the final drive ratios to see if there's any difference and benefit in doing it.

Cheers. I'll take a proper look next autumn. Before that I'd like to engine mod for Gower next summer.
