Graunching / Grinding Noise from rear when reversing

Featured Replies

Hi All, mine is a 2003 Octavia Mk1 Elegance 1.8T Automatic with 67000 miles!

For some time now I have been experiencing the above noise - but ONLY when reversing onto my drive, with steering wheel turned to the left and only when I put my foot on the  brake to control the reversing speed. It is very loud and very embarrassing for both myself and my wife when anyone is in the vicinity.   :envy:

Is there any chance that others have experienced this and have perhaps managed to identify the cause?

All comments, advice will be welcome!

Thank you

If it has the same brakes as the vRS, a site search for "mooing" will help.

Otherwise, I suspect that you may have a stone between the brake and the spray shield, probably against the top of one of the rear callipers.

Thanks for your quick response Ken! I will try and get that checked out ASAP.

It is so difficult to describe this noise - but possibly more like the sound of "tortured metal" if that makes any sense.

I had a similar sounding issue on a 1.8T 4x4 estate which turned out to be a faulty abs sensor on the wheel. Inexpensive fix for a most alarming noise...
