Skoda Octavia mk2 steering angle sensor 1K0953549 replacement

Featured Replies

Hi all,

for a couple of weeks the yellow steering wheel light in the dash is lit.

After the replacement of the battery, which didn't help, I had a look behind the steering wheel and found out that the sensor is part number 1K0953549.

What is the procedure to follow?

Is it just the steering wheel away, open the plastic parts, after 3 screws.

Do I have to take away everything at the front of it, this is where the airbag plug will go in.

After replacement, do I have to follow any other procedures, or is it only to calibrate this with fully left, then fully right and last, steering wheel in the center?

Using the Autel 405 I couldn't find any fault code related to the steering wheel angle sensor.

What fault code do you have?

The part number you have listed is the steering column control unit not the steering angle sensor.

thank you for the message Tech1e, but as I already wrote, no fault code, just the yellow light indicating the steering wheel in the dash.

As far as I understand, the part number does give the information it is the steering angle sensor, I am a bit confused now.

Does Autel 405 communicate with the PAS controller? I thought it did engine and ABS through OBD.

If the light is on there must be a code somewhere. The steering angle sensor plugs into the steering column control unit, it picks up steering movement from the back of the slip ring.

That part number is definitely not the angle sensor. It is the steering wheel controller which is different. That controls the buttons on stalks and wheel buttons (if you have them) and the angle sensor connects to it etc.

The angle sensor is behind the slip ring.

Thank you again for the advise given, I will have to take it apart again, as I don't know the part number of the actual steering wheel angle sensor.

Concerning the lit steering wheel in yellow, does this give indication of more then only the steering angle sensor being faulty?

The Autel Max scan 405 did give a code, although I couldn't relate this to the lit steering wheel.

The only code given was 17055, relating to the first glow plug electrical fault.

The steering wheel means a fault on the steering system. Could be the rack, a number of sensors all sorts of things. You need a VCDS scan to tell you what the fault is.

Driving the car doesn't seem to give any issues.

Steering goes back to the centre, now arm wrestling power needed to steer it and it does steer completely as should.

At first, a couple of months ago, it did give the light, but after the reset, all the way left, all the way right and centre from there got it solved.

Now since a couple of weeks it doesn't disappear anymore and keeps the light lit.

I know reading forums can give to much information or suggesting the wrong information.

VCDS is very interesting, but would me need to buy a Windows laptop, as I use Apple, and it doesn't seem to be possible to implement is with Apple OSX.

Had my Autel Maxscan 405 again searching for code, and only one code came up 01049.

In this case I'm not sure if this can be related to the yellow steering wheel being lit.

As I said your scanner won't pick up steering codes as that doesn't run on OBD.

I've decided to purchase the OBDeleven, had to buy a tablet on Android OS, so that resulted in the happy purchase of the Tesco Hudl 2.

I must say that I am impressed by the options wich the OBSeleven is capable of, although, not having any comparing material other then the Autel VAG, what can I say.

With the first scan the application showed me a list of fault codes wich where:

00573, 00513, this was for the steering.

Other codes:

Central locking 01038, 00097, 00929.

Glowplug 1 P0671 (17055) and glow plug 4 P0674 (17058).

Heated outside mirror driver side: 00943

Lock unit for central locking Driver side 00928.

Central locking overheating protection 01038

Steering torque sensor 00573

Engine speed 00513

Frontdoor passenger door central locking 00097

Lock unit for central locking Frt pass side

00929

After clearing the fault codes the yellow steer in the dash disappeared and after approx 35 miles it didn't return.

Scanning again gave me the following codes:

Front passenger door central locking SAVE motor 00097

Lockunit for central locking Frt Pass side 00929

Vehicle voltage terminal 50 Short circuit to B+

fault code 01049

Cylinder 1 glow plug circuit

Fault code P0671 (17055)

Im happy the fault code for the yellow steer disappeared, the door locking, have to notify that the driver side passenger door lock is slow, I here it locking only when I push the locking button in the car, occasionally when I lock it with the key.

Reading the message concerning:

Vehicle voltage terminal 50 Short circuit to B+

fault code 01049

Could this be the main issue which creates the other fault codes?
