USB & SD Maximum Memory Size

Featured Replies

Hello People,

I have just ordered my new Superb III but having to wait a couple of months or more.  The question I have which I hope someone can answer is:- "What is the maximum size of USB Flash Memory stick and SD Memory Card can I use.

My current car can only handle 32GB (if you put a higher memory Stick in, it does not see some of the music).  This means that I have to split my music up into 3 Memory Sticks, A - H, I - R and S - Z.

Secondly, has anyone tried to connect one of the miniature Hard Disk Drives (HDD) to the USB socket?

If so, which one did you use and did you have any problems doing it?

Many thanks

Jim.

This has been raised in previous threads. The limiting factor isn't the size of the drive but the number of files. When a device is attached (be it SD Card, USB thumb drive, HDD) the infotainment pre-scans the attached/inserted drive to create a log of the files and folders, thereby enabling the list by title/album/artist/genre menus and search function.

This limit appears to be about 10,000 (and a maximum of 1,000 files per folder). Exceed the limit and an error message will appear and any files beyond that limit aren't recognised.

For highest quality bitrate MP3 that generally equates to a little under 64GB, 32GB for medium bitrate.

So while the device can read all SD and HDD sizes (I connected a 2TB USB3 WD Passport drive which is when I first discovered this 10k file limit), anything over 64GB is likely to be a waste of space unless you're using a lossless format like FLAC (with file sizes typically ten times larger than the equivalent MP3) and/or video (Columbus only).

The only devices that are not afflicted by the file count limit are the iPod/iPad/iPhone where the file handling remains with the device and the infotainment doesn't need to pre-scan it.

Excellent, thank you very much.  I did search the forum, entered USB and although I got two pages of items, none explained this.

Many thanks again.

801802971 your forum name looks like a BT EIN/UIN or is it just me living in the past ;)

Spent 43-years on Post Office Telecommunications/BT myself :)

MIB2 systems support SDXC cards so they support cards up to 2TB, well, theoratically.

I have a 128GB card in mine, almost full, all flac. No issues so far.

Hello Prykey,

Yes, you are right, I am using a BT EIN.  Worked there for 38 years, retired 7 years ago and never looked back.  I assume you joined when it was all Strowger and dial telephones  :notme:

You should have been a detective.
