Octavia rear wiper

Featured Replies

Bringing this topic up :)

I just got my Octavia 2011 some days ago, after I used it for a few days (and I played a little with wipers to understand how it works) now I have the same problem, turning the ignition and rear wiper makes 1 full swipe and stops. Apart from that all works good. I tried this last suggestion but did not work.

Anybody knows what is the reason of this, something with wiper motor or is it something we can close?

This seems to be a fairly common problem on the hatchback and it can normally only be solved by replacing the motor, it would appear that as the water supply passes through the motor that the seals leak and seize the motor.....

If you switch the ignition off and lift the arm you can move it slightly back to the park position and switching on the ignition can bring it back but you might have to repeat this a few times and at lest the car looks ok.

Thanks guys for the useful comments

Mike,

Mine is hatchback, I do not keep the wipers on auto mode, they are always closed, it started to happen when I tried the lever to see how it works -  I have only spent 10 days with the car.

So, I turn the ignition, (wiper lever is on` off` mode) rear wiper makes one sweep up and down and stops.

This happens when I put it to auto mode for some time when it is raining - the front ones I use - rear one occasionally)

I have played with that to understand if I did something wrong. When this happens (this 1 time auto swipe) , I turn the ignition, the auto sweep happens, then I put the lever to auto mode for a few seconds and then to the fast mode - and put the lever to `off` position. Then I stop the engine and turn on the ignition - then no more auto swiping! So weird,

I would not care but I have to - generally I have to park under the trees and they leave a lot of hard stuff on the car and windows, so when it sweeps the wiper gets terribly dirty. And in Poland winters are so cold, if this will happen when we will have -10, -15 degrees and the windows are frozen, probably the wiper will be easily destroyed and I will have to change it all the time.

If it is like even after changing the motor if it still does the same, I would consider to inactivate it somehow. I drove Megane 2 saloon for long time without any rear wiper for years.

Last week I wanted to go for a small local garage to check it- when I went there to show the issue- it did not happen :))

While I wanted to come to work this morning, turned the ignition and same thing happened, I did the same that I explained above - auto mode - fast mode and `off` turrned the engine off and turned the ignition once more and again it stopped happening

Do you mean that the rear wiper motor makes one sweep when you turn the ignition on, regardless of whether the switch is on or off? Or do you mean that when you switch the rear wiper on, it only does one wipe then stops?

Reason I ask is this - if it stops working after you have switched it on, it is a failure of the motor, especially on the hatchback, which has the washer pipe going through the motor itself. As said it is a very common issue on the Octavia.

However, I posted a few weeks ago about something that still happens on my 08 plate preFL estate - especially if the rear of the car has been parked towards a hot sun, the rear wiper will give a single sweep when the ignition is switched on, It happens totally randomly, sometimes it does it, sometimes it doesn't, but every time it has happened, the wiper switch has been off.

No fault code is every stored, and nobody has ever suggested why it does it or what causes it. It did this before a new motor fitted, but this still happens even after it was replaced.

Exactly that is annoying. For me, I just found out when I occasionally open this auto mode while driving, after that when I turn on the ignition this happens then I change the lever into 2 modes and it stops, so for now okay.

I also see similar topics for Yeti, Superb here and in different forums. I have a feeling it might also be about the programming of this wiper modes, but hard to understand. I do not want to spend money to change the motor if nothing will change as after buying the car, not keen on spending much more money.  My biggest concern right now is, what I read about this timing chain and tensioner,

I will try to inactivate rear wiper before winter if it continues like this.

It certainly sounds very similar to what occasionally happens with my estate - one single sweep of the rear wiper with ignition turn on when wiper switch off. And I too never keep the wipers in auto node. Its very rare I use that. (I prefer the standard variable delay intermittent my other Octavia has!)

Note the auto wipe setting has no effect on the rear wiper, it is for front wipe only.

Remember also that whenever the FRONT wipers are turned on by the switch, the REAR should make one sweep when shifting into reverse gear,

On mine, EVERYTHING works absolutely normal, it never fails to works when it should, but the occasional single sweep when turning on the ignition is really annoying. As it happens very rarely and only when it seems the rear of the car is hot from the sun, it's not something I am worried about - I just live with it -- but would love to know the answer why it does it!

That single wipes as annoying as hell though when the windscreen is bone dry ..... Mines done it too, still does but then sticks at the back of the return swipe
