What is it with garages these days?

Featured Replies

Here are some of my woes:

  • My dashcam captured a garage thrashing my car along the bypass and running an errand to a dealer to get parts for another customer's job.
  • Steering rack failed. Taken to a "specialist" in Milton Keynes who repaired it. A few months later one of the tie rods failed and the same garage replaced it with a different spec part and caused it to foul the wheel at full lock. "Specialist" garage refused to rectify the fault. Took to another garage who found that the steering arms were fitted to the wrong sides and were different specs so couldn't just be swapped over. Presented evidence to "specialist" garage and no response. Had to claim through credit card company.
  • Had new tyres fitted a few months ago. They were about to jack the car up on the sills (which is how they get damaged on so many Octys) and I had to tell them to stop. The tyre pressures were all over the place too.
  • New discs and pads fitted all round along with new rear calipers. Garage couldn't get a good pedal after bleeding the brakes and wanted to charge me for replacing the master cylinder with no guarantee it would fix it (and I think unlikely to be the cause). Had to get the car recovered home. I took one of the front wheels off and the wheel bolts were suspiciously easy to undo - checked the bolts on the other side with my torque wrench and they were all quite a bit below what they should've been.

All of the above experiences were at different garages and all had seemingly good reviews (and/or I'd had work done there before).

If/when I win the lottery I'll start up my own garage so that I know work on my car is being done properly  :D

Had my bike serviced locally, rode it home and discovered a couple of days later due to the smell that they hadn't put a clip on the fuel pipe so the tank was dripping petrol onto the engine as I rode home.

Luckily it was a short run so neither the engine or exhaust got up to temp. Didn't do anything but he never got any more work from me.
