Has anyone come across a problem with the up / down mechanism on the drivers seat?

Basically i have my seat pretty much to the floor and discovered a few years ago that although the seat will quite happily raise when the leaver is pulled up it simply wont go back down when the lever is pushed down, the lever just stops.

 

This has never posed a problem because i was happy with the seat position so left it where it was however someone else has driven my car today and adjusted the seat, the only occasion i forgot to mention this quirk, its not by much but its enough to irritate me and id rather fix the problem now i have to to stop it happening again

 

any help would be appreciated.

Not come across this problem, but my first step would be to remove the seat and look at the mechanism underneath for any obvious problems.

 

If you can't work out what's wrong with it or it's beyond repair then I would look at getting a second hand seat (or changing your seats for Golf Recaros or similar).

as per vrsTom , rip the seat out and check the mech, It might just have Life stuck in it, Paper, Fluff, The previous owners finger....

 

If the mech is dead then upgrade time or scrappy for a replacement.

There is a big spring underneth the seat and the connection to the mechanism usually breaks off at one end. It can be fixed, have a search on the mkiv golf forums and you will find some guides how to do it.
