Mileage issues - Octavia 1.9Tdi

Featured Replies

Hello All,

I am from India & I bought an Octavia 1.9Tdi rider three months back and i got the car fully serviced (Not in an authorised service center), but a known local workshop.

As there was black smoke from the exhausts, even at lower speeds, i had the turbo charger's EGR valve replaced and eventually got rid of it too.

Now after driving for 1k Kilometers too, i am shocked for the low mileage the car has been delivering. The average mileage i get is about 10Km per Litre, in the city.

I hope, you could give me a heads up from where to start to analyze the issue.

Thanks!!

Firstly, "Rider" is not a European trim level, so we have no idea about engine code or tune, or which gearbox the car has.

Secondly, I've seen Chenai and Mumbai traffic where I'd have thought 10km/l was good, due to how low the traffic speed was.

Thirdly, I'd start by checking fault codes, to see if there is anything relating to over-fuelling (for example very high injector duty cycles for an off-boost engine), since black smoke normally means that the engine is over-fuelling and blowing out soot as a result.

Thanks for the reply KenONeill. Just to let you know, i did a scan on the car and found the Air mass flow sensor fault code. Apparently, i got it rectified the same day and there are no fault codes now as such.

If you could elaborate on what could cause the over-fuelling and how can that be mitigated please?
